Forgetting to lift cash from ATM...

pinkjay, 24 April, 2009 at 15:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Anyone done this? H went to the atm there and forgot to lift the cash, he thinks it definately got 'sucked' back into the machine as there was no one else around him at the time. He went into the bank (Ulster bank) and they said he will have to speak to his own bank (Barclays) and fill out a claim form.

Will this take ages and whats the real chances of getting the money back? Barclays wont speak to me as its not my account, H will have to into Belfast tomorrow and find out more. We are so skint and this is the last thing I needed☹️

That happened to me once - I took the card, forgot to take the money, and it was all sucked back into the machine.

This was on my way to work, and the bank wasn't open, so I went there that lunchtime. I checked my watch at the time I realised my mistake, so I could give them a very precise time of withdrawal, they checked with their own records and confirmed that my card was indeed used to make a withdrawal and that the money was sucked back into the machine, and I got it back there and then on the same day.

But I think it was a branch of Barclays, and I have an account there, so it was probably more straightforward than if I'd done it with another bank.

Have you checked your account to make sure it is showing up as withdrawn?

I used to work for a bank and sometimes when customers forgot to take the cash and it was sucked back in, their account would automatically update and show a reversal of the ATM transaction.

Thank you Mr JK. H finally got through to Barclays on the phone and they were very helpful. It should automatically go back into his account within 3 working days once the ATM machine has been balanced and they see its £50 over, they can trace what account it belongs too. If not he has to call Barclays on Wednesay and they will chase it up. So its looking hopeful!

Its still showing as a withdrawal only. I check it each day so will keep an eye on it.

    Thank you!

Yes, this happens sometimes, and if the ATM pulled the cash back in, your husband should be able to get the money refunded after the bank checks the machine records. Barclays may ask him to fill out a claim form, but usually the amount is returned within a few days. Even businesses that Rent an ATM Machine deal with these kinds of ATM cash retraction issues regularly.

If the cash was pulled back into the ATM, there’s a good chance Barclays can recover it once the machine is balanced and checked. Situations like this happen more often than people think. Even during an Abu Dhabi ATM balance check or cash withdrawal, ATM systems normally record every transaction and cash retraction, which helps banks verify what happened and process claims faster.
