From where did the popularity of Barbour quilted jackets appear from?

WIseMonkey, 2 of May of 2012 at 14:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 48

I understand a lot of the public have been wearing these out on the high street for a number of months but i'm having a dull day and thinking about rubbish.

How or why have these become fashionable amongst people who are obviously not the stereotypical Barbour country attire wearer? Any thoughts?

As i type another late 20's early 30's fella has walked past me wearing one.

See that's what i mean. Normally see them on farmer types.

I'm far from fashionable thus my cluelessness.

Do you mean the classic diamond-stitched shapeless ones? I haven't seen anyone wear one of those, ever.

Anyway, fashion, m'eh. Young'uns thinking they've discovered something novel, only to realise five years later that it looked sh*t unless you had a rifle over your shoulder and labrador faithfully following you.

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago a friend of mine telling me that all the blokes were wearing them on the terraces (at football). That was the first time I was aware of Barbour clothing in an "urban" sense. They were one of our customers at work so everyone was always asking if we could discount with them.

There have been lots of copies on the high st. The Paul's Boutique ones seem really popular with young girls.

I went to the Gold Cup day at Cheltenham in March and I'd say 80% of the men there were wearing Barbour-esque quilted jackets.

As the wife of a shooter/general country bumpkin I heard Barbour were struggling financially so they designed said fashion jackets to appeal to a wider target audience. Has worked though! Don't like em vey much.

Don't get your knickers in a twist, just because I haven't seen any doesn't mean I was saying that nobody wears them!

    Anyway, this fine:

    This less so:

But it's down to taste, suppose. I get annoyed when people wear deck shoes - you're not on a boat flower, no need.

Do you wear them on boats?

    If not:

This is exactly right. They only started doing a female line a few years ago and it now outsells the men's. They have done well in turning the company around.

I'm not a big fan of the jackets but I'm all for British business thriving!

No knickers in twists here! I was just pointing out places where I have seen lots of them, you weren't even quoted on that post.

Just as an add on, the ones I saw in them at the races were more like the second pic you posted than the first.

I have some navy ones which are cross between deck shoes and loafers. I quite like them but I don't feel like the weather has been warm enough to wear them much yet.

What if it's icy outside? Or really snowy? I walk to Asda in Hunters in these situations. Is that ok?

Other than that they are reserved for dog walking.

I like them but on me they look utterly ridiculous. I have issue finding coats due to my immense pear-shapedness.

Deck shoes, I like a lot. Although with my size 8 flippers they look less than attractive.

Not painting myself in the most attractive light here.

I wore my Hunters and quilted jacket to the shop on Sunday as it was very wet and very windy. Jo, you must hate me!

I tried one on and I just looked like a big square. With a head and some legs poking out the bottom. Not a great look.

I like hunters and I really want a pair - but I just can't justify the cost when my £12.99 floral bad boys from B&Q do the same job.

People who want Hunters - if you're size 5 or under you can get kids ones for about £30.

I actually loved the style of jacket when I first saw a male friend wear one. But this was just as the trend was kicking off again so to speak so the only one I could fine was from River Island, however it's nicely fitted and a gorgeous goldy colour I love it. Dead warm too!
