Getting a tattoo done under wedding ring

chids, 22 August, 2008 at 10:46 Posted on Planning 0 21

H wants us to get one another's names tattood underneath our wedding rings. I am quite keen to do this too however i'm worried about not being able to wear my wedding ring for a while whilst the tattoo heals.

I've had a tattoo before on my ankle but it was about 10 years ago and i can't remember what the rules were with regards to covering it up or letting it heal. I want to be able to put my wedding ring back on straight afterwards but i don't know whether we'll be able to do this.

Can anyone give me any up to date tattooing advice.

You definitely won't be able to put your ring straight on, for at least 2 weeks I'd say. You need to allow the tattoo to scab and heal and you will only encourage infection if you put your ring on too soon.

I've fallen in love with Cheryl Coles hand tattoo so have decided that is going to be my next one but extending up the side of my arm too

My OH had to cover his tat with cling film as it was being rubbed by his t-shirts. Could you not cover it with a small strip of cling film during the day and wear your ring over it - then take it all off and let it breathe at night? Would it not hurt to wear the ring anyway if you have a scab on your finger ?

P.S. I know nothing much about tat's just trying to make suggestions and be helpful....

That's a good idea. I'll mention it. I'll let H get his done first anyway to see if it hurts.

You are still married, even if you dont wear your ring, you know?

i would just stick some cling film on it for a few days and then let it breathe for a week, should be fine after that

Why don't you wait til you come back from honeymoon? as the sun is not good for tatts either if you're going somewhere hot!

Then you'll have something to look forward to when you come home

We're not going on honeymoon for 6 weeks anyway so that's not a problem really.

Thanks for your advice girls. I think i'm going to let H have it done first and if it hurts then i might chicken out.

No not at all. He loves tattoos and has been on about getting another done for ages anyway. He's got two so far and he can stand the pain more than me. God knows how i'm going to cope when it comes to having children ?

Apologies if you're already married, but couldn't you get the tats done before the wedding so they have time to heal before you put the rings on? ? failing that,I'd just wear your rings on the wrong hand for a few weeks .

When I got mine done, I was told to put pile cream on it ? sounds daft but it worked. It felt like sunburn for a bit but was ok with the cream on (honest)

My sister just had one on her hand and it's healing like a b*tch. She will need a bit of re touching to get it how she wants it as it's such a bad place.

Op - your ring will have to stay off for a few weeks, I had one on my foot and it's been 3 weeks now and it's still damn scabby.

Fab idea! I'm sure you're aware of this anyway, but the ring will more than likely wear the tattoo away. My OH has tattoos on the side of his hand and has had them touched up a couple of times coz it's right on the place which rubs on clothes/surfaces!!

I know its not the same, but you could always wear your ring on a necklace whilst it's healing.... close to your heart and all that cheese!!

OH and I are getting tattoos shortly before our wedding, on our feet. He is having 'If the beginning is strong....' and I'm having '.... the end will be perfect'. Sorry just wanted to share as most of my friends aren't tattoo fans!

Bepanthen rocks - its nappy rash cream. You've got lots of advice on here -most of it is spot on.

maisybelle - don't leave it too 'shortly' before your wedding - tattoos' need time to heal as you've said yourself .... my pal had a daisy chain across her foot, insisted on wearing her boots within a few days and ended up with a shyte looking tattoo because the ink had been disturbed - its the same if you pick at your scabs ... healing tattoos are frustrating as hell but i find a good sharp smack with a paddle brush does the trick when my back is driving me insane!

Thats a good tip! ? I've had a couple of tattoos so was planning on having them done 2 months before the wedding, and it's the perfect excuse to wear flip flops in winter!!
