Getting your wedding dress to your destination

Alohabride, 4 February, 2012 at 22:18 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 4

Hiya ladies.

I was just wondering what u were doing about travelling with your dress? We fly with virgin and they say either check it into the hold or have it as hand luggage... I really don't want to put it in the hold as I'm frightened it will get separated from me... I've done a bit of internet digging and come us with a website called dress in a box which makes dress boxes to fit the sizes of hand luggage and I'll have to pack the dress into it and have it steamed when we get there... Is anyone else doing this? Has anyone heard of this website?

Thanks for your help x

    Hi Alohabride,

I was worried about taking my dress abroad too. Was adamant that I was taking it on as hand luggage, but it was too big to fit into a hand luggage case, so I had no option but to put it in the hold. All I did was buy some Fragile tape, taped it all up and it went last on first off, with buggies etc...

What is your dress like? I wouldn't recommend packing your dress yourself - I dropped my case off at the dress shop a week before we flew out, they packed my dress the morning we were setting off so I picked it up last. As soon as we got to the hotel (dress had been in case for 2 days), I hung it up and just let it drop. It didn't need steaming as it was packed perfectly.

Sorry it's such a long reply but hope that helps! xxx

I probably wouldnt bother with those boxes. You can get a cabin case for the same price that you can use again. If the boxes are the same size, it seems a bit pointless.

Like LakeGardabride said, get your dress shop to pack it for you, and if its a little creased, just hang in the bathroom and turn the shower on for half an hour.

I was looking at that website and another one called emptyboxcompany (I think), but then I phoned my airline and they said they prefer to take them in a dress bag and hang them up in first class.

I'll phone them again a couple of weeks before we leave just to get specific confirmation, but if that's what they prefer, that's what I'll do. I already have my dress as I bought a sample, but the shop told me to take it to them a few weeks before I leave and they'll steam it and put it back nicely in the bag.

I'm flying with Virgin to Vegas but my dress is too big to go in hand luggage/a dress box. We were going to just carry it on in a bag and hope they would hang it in the wardrobe. However, now I am looking into sending the dress ahead to Vegas by UPS/Fed Ex to a dress steaming company who will let me know when it's arrived, steam it and deliver it to our hotel. Had lots of recommendations for her service so I just have to get over the nerves of sending my dress on ahead with a courier and letting it out of my sight! ?

I would have a look on ebay if you do decide to go down the box route. You can find similar boxes to dress in a box etc and they cost a lot less.

I carried mine as a hand luggage along with the shoes and birdcage veil. I didn't want to part with them until after the wedding so that was the only choice.

We flew with Etihad to Bangkok and had a 2hours stop over in Abu Dhabi. The airline was really good and they hung the dress in first class wardrobe. When we landed the dress was ready by the exit for us to pick up.

I had a tea length wedding dress but I didn't want to pack it because I didn't want any creases. But it wasn't too much problem travelling with it in the end.
