Gift ideas for someone emigrating to Finland

A friend of mine, after 20 years teaching in the UK, is emigrating to Finland in 3 weeks time to teach chemistry and physics in an international school.

I'm after some ideas of what I can get her as a leaving gift. It needs to be small, light and non-breakable.

Alternatively, would it be better to post something to her after she's over there, as a 'new home' gift - as then she won't have the hassle of having to pack it herself.

How much time have you got, how well do you know her, and do you have mutual friends?

I'd be tempted to do a kind of scrap book / photo album thing with notes, photos, etc, of friends and places you've shared.

When friends of ours have moved to another country we have done a wee 'parcel' for them of some scottish things they won't get there - like a mini scottish cookbook so they can make a scottish meal; some tablet and a tartan teddybear; tacky tea towel and a mounted (but inframed) print of somewhere special to them like edinburgh castle or the mountains.

If you want something more 'quirky' why not buy a Moomin book? Moomin are culturally v. big over there still, so it might be good/fun for them to have a copy of a book - preferably the cartoon/graphic novel one. We found that children out there expect you to know the moomin characters etc - they forget we in the UK haven't had moomin cartoons here since 1980!

I would suggest it involves alcohol as in order to have a drink over there she will have to remortgage her house several times.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Just after posting I was reminded about a meeting which lasted for 5 hours!

I like the idea of a moonim book, or is it moomin?
