Gifts

Hayley, 2 February, 2022 at 09:18 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 14
Who is everyone buying gifts for? I was thinking best men and bridesmaids, but my partner mentioned parents the other day as they're paying about a third of the wedding each. I am thinking they'd rather we didn't then spend money on them as they have given it to us to help us out. What's everyone else doing and what's your thoughts? Thanks.

We are getting gifts for best man, bridesmaids, parents and my grandmother as she paid for our wedding cake. You could take your parents out for dinner as a thank you or get them something small even some flowers, wine and a thank you card rather than not getting them anything x

I think some people give bridesmaid bouquets to their mother and mother in law. Maybe a bottle of something for your father and father in law? Or a nice meal somewhere for all of you could be nice.

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately my father and father in law are not wine or spirit drinkers. I love the idea of a meal but not sure we'll get time. My parents live about 500 miles away and I think we'll be busy setting up and taking down the whole time they're here as we're having the reception on private land so diying.

For parents maybe garden club vouchers? They can be used all over the place and in different stores. For our BMs and groomsmen we are getting them a voucher for their favourite shop to treat themselves as I feel that is more useful than the usual glasses/hip flasks etc that no one ever uses

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I'm all for a useful gift. I'm never very in to things or tat haha. I was wondering about necklaces for the bridesmaids.

I don't actually think we'll end up getting anyone anything...! It's not something we've thought about anyway. Is it still the done thing?

I'm going to take my bridesmaid for a spa day a bit before the wedding and maybe get her some jewellery. She's done tonnes to help us plan everything so definitely deserves something.

My partner will do a speech and thank everyone but I think that's as much as it'll be!

I hadn’t planned on getting anyone anything… should we?! Only my mum is financially contributing so I think it would look odd if we only have her a gift… and literally no spare budget to give lots of people things. That said, my (little) nieces are bridesmaids and may give them nail varnish/jewellery etc to wear on the day and/or some form of kids entertainment gift for them, my nephew and my almost step son. I don’t think it’s a done thing like it used to be (at least I hope not!)

If they wear jewellery then yes that is good, you can get some nice bits on Etsy . I can't wear anything due to allergies, my ring had to be coated every 3 months but people still buy me Jewellery and then I say I can't wear it and they are like oh yeah I have never seen you wear it 😂

I wasn’t sure this was still a thing either. Only my parents are contributing so not sure how to go about it. Perhaps give his mum (dad no longer with us) a bouquet and my parents a meal voucher. For junior BMs and my MOH I will give jewellery.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure it's much of a thing. I'm bridesmaid in May, before getting married in September, so maybe I'll see what my friend does 😂 She's my bridesmaid in September.

It is, more for them as the wasted money as you can't return it!
