Giving notice

Pookie8911, 3 May, 2016 at 19:37 Posted on Planning 0 3

I appreciate this probably works differently for every local council, but hoping someone may be able to give some advice. We live under St Helens Council, but are getting married in Stockport's vicinity....

So, we've paid our deposit to Stockport's registrar service to book our date and time. We're now less than a year until the wedding (ahh!), so can now do our notice of intent to marry for St Helens. They say this can only be done from 12 months before the wedding, but is there any limit on how late you can? Is it something that's just best getting done and out the way? I'm a little peeved they charge an extra £10 each to do it on a Saturday, when that's currently the only day that me and OH can do together! Smiley sad

Can someone just clarify the process a little for me please!? Thanks!

I think it needs to be done about a month before the wedding at the latest. I seem to remember being told something about giving at least 29 days notice.

I just checked our confirmation of our ceremony date & time (we have booked over a year in advance) & it says notice MUST be given between two dates, & the time frame given is a year to the day before the wedding, for 30 days, i.e. if we were getting married on 30th June 2017, it says we MUST give notice between 30th June 2016 & 29th July 2016. Not sure if that's just because we've booked really early?

You just have to give over 28 days notice, less than a year away. There's some info on the gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/giving-notice-at-your-local-register-office

    Hope this helps!

Thank you! That link really helped. We've decided to hold off for a bit as we are thinking of moving house, so might move under a different council (then assume we'd have to do it again!)
