    Getting married in a church, don't believe in god, don't really want any hellfire and damnation.

    I know its hypocritical getting married in a church blah blah blah but there are reasons. So if anyone knows any nice readings from the bible that don't bang on about men owning women or sin or anything dark, I'd be really grateful!

    Thanks xxx

    Its the most polite way to say that I find what you've posted somewhat incredulous.

    One of ours is this...
    Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
    9 Two are better than one,
    because they have a good return for their work:
    10 If one falls down,
    his friend can help him up.
    But pity the man who falls
    and has no one to help him up!
    11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
    But how can one keep warm alone?
    12 Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
    A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

    Obv the cord of 3 strands is about God, but the rest is just about being 2 people together!

    Also all the ones from the song of solomon are about lovers, don't think it talks about God at all...
    Song of Solomon, Chapter 2, verses 10-13;
    10 My lover spoke and said to me,
    "Arise, my darling,
    my beautiful one, and come with me.

    11 See! The winter is past;
    the rains are over and gone.

    12 Flowers appear on the earth;
    the season of singing has come,
    the cooing of doves
    is heard in our land.

    13 The fig tree forms its early fruit;
    the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
    Arise, come, my darling;
    my beautiful one, come with me."

    Chapter 8, verses 6&7

    6 Place me like a seal over your heart,
    like a seal on your arm;
    for love is as strong as death,
    its jealousy [a] unyielding as the grave.
    It burns like blazing fire,
    like a mighty flame. [c]

    7 Many waters cannot quench love;
    rivers cannot wash it away.
    If one were to give
    all the wealth of his house for love,
    it [d] would be utterly scorned.

    Ok, may I have permission please to ask for any suggestions of bible readings that may contain references to god, but not darkness? By darkness I mean sin, death, pain, patriarchy etc.

    Sorry if I offended any religious zealots out there.

    To add, they are all about God, but in more of an allegorical way!

    Woah there! I said sorry, didn't I?

    My feelings towards religion are very confused and I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't think it would meet such consternation and I was wrong. Are you offended that I asked for help with this or the term "religious zealots"?

    I could be wrong but I would think your vicar/priest will expect you to use some religous readings. Of couse you could tell him you don't believe in god......

    Not wanting to offend but can I ask why you are getting married in church if you aren't religous ?

    Well initially I was bowled over at your apparent ignorance regarding a Godless bible reading which is why I didn't quite believe your post was serious.

    Then I was astounding at your audacity that only religious zealots could have found your post offensive at worst and ignorant at the very least. Plus the patronising way you put your second post across.

    And please don't tell me to 'whoa there' i'm not a horse.

    No one would be offended by you asking for help. The term "zealot" is an insult one similar to "fanatic" and to label someone that took offence to you requsting a passage from the Bible that didn't contain God a zealot is down right ignorant.

    I also took offence to the tone you used when refering to the subjects covered in the bible. If you took time to actually read it then perhaps your attitude would improve and you would have learnt some humility, instead of sounding condescending and arrogant!

    Good luck with your Godless reading in a house of God....

    We had this problem too - but the old testament is pretty good for readings which are not too God based(and obviously don't mention Jesus!) Unfortunately our vicar vetoed all our choices on readings, bible and other so we basically ended up with the one he wanted, I don't even remember what we had tbh

    The book of Esther doesn't mention God at all, and is about a marriage. You'd have to read through it to find something suitable.

    But please tell us why you are getting married in church.

    I agree, i would like to know why you have chosen to marry in a church, if you have such strong feelings about choosing a reading wih no mention of God?!!

    We have chosen to have Corinthians, purely because it talks about love and we liked it. ?

    I was only teasing!! I really don't mind helping. I don't like the term religious zealot though - it implies that I push my view on other people, which I don't!

    I also was totally astounded by your tone on this thread, and also, even though you have been asked several times, have still not answered "why are you getting married in Church" as someone who is really struggling to get married in church at the moment, I find it amazing that someone is getting married in a Church but has those sorts of views

    Another one wondering why you're getting married in a church.....

    I could understand if the options were church or tatty registry office, but there are so many lovely options for civil ceremonies now that I just don't get it.

    So many questions...

    Firstly, I totally apologise for what I said, I was rude and offensive and I am genuinely sorry.

    Secondly, I haven't refused to say why I'm getting married in a church, I just went to bed, then work! Back now, time to Hitch!

    I have kind of explained this on a previous thread, but here goes:

    My family was catholic, as was his. My immediate family are incredibly anti-catholic nowadays. Neither of us are comfotable with the catholic faith, although both of us have strong sentimental attachments to churches (the buildings, this one in particular for me) and hymns.
    Because we don't believe in god, we initially planned to get married in the local registry office. On further investigation, we discovered that weddings now take place in an office shared with the local social services. I was fostered through said social services as a child, and have many incredibly painful memories of that building.

    We always knew where our reception venue would be, and they would not consider getting a marriage license. We then thought about the small church, which is on the grounds of our venue. We chatted to the vicar, and explained the situation. She was more than happy to accommodate our wishes, as she feels that the CofE should encourage parishoners to join in whenever possible, despite knowing that we would not be regular attenders of church.
    We are both very happy with how our ceremony will be, our families are coming to terms with it and the vicar is being superb, but we don't feel that it would be appropriate to include hymns or readings that go against our beliefs entirely. So although allusions to god etc. are fine, we don't want any heavy religious wording.

    The title of my thread is totally inappropriate and doesn't explain the whole situation, and once again I am very sorry for causing offence. I don't know what came over me last night.[:I]

    Probably going to get comments too, but me and my h2B are also getting married in Church and are not religious. Its always been in my head tat i would marry in church. We did consider a civil ceremony but apart from the horrible registry office, there is nowhere else to go, unless we want to pay about £7000. THe reception venue we have chosen is going to come to around £4000. Big difference!

    A lot of my parent's families are religious and I think if my Grandad was still alive he would have wanted to see me married in a church.

    I'm happy to have all the hymns and 'god stuff' but I do agree that it would be nice in a more subtle way. I definitely will be having a look at the readings some of you suggested.

    Good to know I'm not the only one! Phew! To be honest, I didn't think it was such a rare thing, I know lots of people in a similar position (sadly none with any good reading to pinch!)

    Regarding the Esther readings, is old testament ok or does it count as being jewish rather than christian? Excuse my ignorance.
