Going from blonde to brunette - advice needed

WhiteFairy, 17 April, 2008 at 10:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Bit of a frivolous question . . .

I keep thinking of going brunette, but I've been a dark blonde all my life and it's a bit scary. I'm not one to change my appearance that much.

If I put on a semi-permanent colour to see if I like it dark, what will happen when this fades? Will it just go a funny mousy colour? Or should I just go for a permanent colour?

Sorry for the probably thick questions, but I've only ever had blonde highlights before. ?

    Hi Hecate

    Yep - very nerve-wracking! ?

I have a hair appointment tonight, and am wondering whether to take the plunge! But if it all goes wrong, how hard is it to get my blonde-ness back?

Can some hair colouring veterans help?

Yup I'm exactly the same. I did actually dye my hair dark brown when I was about 16 ? it looked ok but this time I going to try auburn, admittedly I'm a bit scared but what the hell ?

Well a hair dying veteran I certainly am! I naturally have mousy brown hair, from about 15 I had blonde highlights in so it progressivly got lighter, at about 18 my hair had banded by having so many different blondes in it I went to the hairdresser and had an all over darker tint put on and a few lighter highlights, I think this was meant to be semi-permanent. I've since been black and am now white blonde!

I wouldn't advise semi permanent, and my hair dresser friend backed this up because it's very rarely semi permanent. I would speak to the hair dresser and see what they say, what about an all over dark brown with a few lighter brown streaks to lift it?

I've done this recently, it was really scary but ok in the end!

I've always dyed my hair blond and was going to dye it ages ago but decided it wouldn't be right not to have blond hair for my wedding! So waiting until a year after the wedding and went for it!! I even got my sister to do it with a shop bought one. It went very dark to start with and everyone was very shocked to see it. Its now faded loads and is probably a bit less harsh. I did go to the hairdressers to have it cut and she said that I would need to do it quite often as the dye comes off easily even if it is permenent as the hair is less pourous. She also said it would be very hard to go back to blond now, eek!!

    HTH!

Yeah I meant to add when I went back to blonde I had to bleach it and that is not fun. I did it at home and my hair came out all colours of the rainbow, white blonde, red, brown, yellow ?

    Thanks for the replies.

Still scared, but I keep seeing ladies with lovely dark hair and thinking that I would like a change. I want Myleene Klass's hair.
Maybe I should just get a wig. ?

I've done this - artificially blonde from around the age of 17 until I was 35. It was part of a magazine make-over and I was dead scared. However, after the initial couple of days of absolute shock and horror at what I had done, I now love being my natural colour again and always get comments on my colour.

I slightly modified my makeup to suit - nothing drastic - and now I can say I would never go back to being artificial.

I would definitely say go permanent as opposed to semi, which isn't guaranteed.

Go on, you'll look fab and you'll wonder why it took you so long to take the plunge ?

Thanks Fluffyduck. In your opinion, do you think being dark will suit me? Here I am.

I am naturally a dark brunette but went progressively ligher from the age of about 24 until last year when I got married. I went back to dark brown for our wedding and even thought it's my natural hair colour it was still a big shock! I did consider going blonde again but actually really like the brown now I am used to it again. I do have a few caramel highlights to break it up but my hair looks much healthier when its dark and it's a lot easier on it than the bleach was.

My best advice is to prepare for it as I felt very pale with darker hair (or get a spray tan!) and be ready for it to take a while to get used to. I tried going light - mid brown first but found it really wishy washy so took the plunge to darker brown. I think you have to go all or nothing to avoid that washed out, mousy colour in between (especially as you are paying for it)
