Gooseberry gardeners, how do you tell if they are ripe?

Copper, 26 June, 2009 at 16:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I have inherited, in our new garden a few fruit bushes, raspberry, redcurrant and gooseberry. They are all full of fruit but I don't know how to tell if the gooseberries are ripe or not. I'd say they are about the size of thumb knuckle to thumb tip. Is it just a case of, if they have "a bit of give" they are ripe?

Thanks, in anticipation of gooseberry fool and crumble ?

H has got loads of what I thought were really big gooseberries on his bush and when I asked him if he was going to pick them, he said no, he wanted it to rain a bit more and for them to get a bit plumper. I assume he'll do the "bit of give test" too at some point soon and then get cooking. Shame I absolutely LOATHE gooseberries! ?

Hi, the gooseberries should "give slightly" when gently squeezed. You should also be able to see the seeds inside (unless they're the rare red variety).

Mine are just about ready. Can't decide whether to eat them or make them into wine - decisions, decisions.
