Groomsmen suits

Katie, 20 October, 2024 at 16:07 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 1
Hello, we are in the process of sorting out suits. My partner is having quite a few groomsmen and we would love to pay for them all but we physically can’t. How can we nicley ask for them to contribute £50 towards ? They would be keeping the suits after the wedding.

That's a tricky one, because in the UK, it is customary for the bride and groom to pay for anything they require their wedding party to have. The easiest option would be to let them wear their own clothes - if having everyone matching is important to you, then you could always provide matching ties/buttonholes.

If having the groomsmen wear matching suits is non-negotiable for you, then you could ask fewer people to be groomsmen so that you can afford to pay for the suits. If that's not an option either, then your fiance needs to be specific about the costs involved when he issues the invitations. If he has already asked his groomsmen, then he needs to tell them about the costs involved as soon as possible, and also make it clear that if anyone wants to drop out at this stage, he understands. No one truly knows anyone else's circumstances, and £50 towards a suit may be a real financial stretch for some, even if they look well off to others. And while they may get to keep the suit, that's only helpful if they regularly wear suits anyway and the suit is a cut and colour that they would choose to wear normally.
