Had your driving test in Bury or Cambridge? Advice please!

Hi.

I have two driving instructors. I'm greedy like that. Well actually it's because I have to work away during the week (can't drive) so I have lessons in Cambridge during the week and then at home at the weekend. Need to decide which one to do my test in. Bury has a very poor pass rate (30%) and a bit of a bad reputation so I wondered what people's experiences were?

Have you taken any driving tests at these centres? What was it like?

Thanks.

Well Bury has some really horrible double mini roundabouts which apparently most people go the wrong way round, even those people who've been driving for years! But the Cambridge driving instructors car is petrol and I don't like it as much as the other car.

I wouldn't go on pass rates. I would go on which car you feel most comfortable in. Good luck.

I took mine in Bury, but about 10 years ago! There's only one set of double roundabouts, which really are fine. I passed second time, but it was mainly due to having an examiner I felt more comfortable with as nerves were mine own worst enemy, nothing to do with Bury itself!

I took (and passed mine) in Bury 9 years ago. The double roundabout is fine really, just get your instructor to go over it a few times with you. I also lived in Cam for 8 years and driving there is a nightmare. Drivers are so much more considerate in Bury and therefore make things easier for you.

It all depends on WHERE in Cambridge you'll end up driving - try and get an early test and go out on the M11/A14 so you get stuck in the traffic ?

Seriously though, I've never driven round Bury, but Cambridge can be a b*gger at times too, just take Mitcham's Corner, for examples (aka Staples Roundabout).. Same with the Trumpington Road mini-roundabouts.. There's a double there, too..

Just make sure you get plenty of practice driving round both places, and get used to the routes, such as the examples mentioned above.

I'd suggest to try and have a mock test with a different instructor to the ones you're with, as that person can then easier pick up on what you've missed out on.. I took my driving test via BSM, and I couldn't fault them. Since then though the instructor's gone solo.

Hope this helps, if only a little! xxx

I passed mine in Cambridge but it was years ago, my mum failed several in Cambridge and then swapped to Bury and passed but she still will not drive in cambridge to this day as she finds it too busy. I would say it all depends on where you know best and where you feel most comfortable driving.

Thanks everyone, I know there are two test centres in Cambridge. I can't remember the name of which one he uses but it;s the one that pretty much looks like a shed with a few car parking spaces. I'm not putting in for a test for a month or so, so I guess I just have to get more familar with the routes before I decide.

OH took his last year and wasent actually in bury at all as they have aparently exctended the area to a 6 mile radius (i think) around bury so he was more rossendale way. it dose depend on which car and where you feel most comphy tho.

Hi. I assume you mean Bury St Edmunds, given its proximity to Cambridge. I took my test in BSE. And if I had to do it again I'd do it in Bury. Cyclists are a law unto themselves at times and I do think it is busier. The double roundable really isn't that bad, you just have to userstand that you may have to stop at the second after being able to proceed at the first. People don't always go around it the wrong way - imagine how many accidents that would create! My instructor at the time (10 years ago) told me to walk down there and watch the flow of the traffic to become accustomed to that set of roundabouts. Anyway, I don't think I even went that way in my test as it turned out.

My Friends dad is a driving instructor he goes for Cambridge everytime and My h had the choice and also was told Cambridge was better.

I did mine in Cambridge - Cyclists only an issue around the colleges at lecture start finish times.

Mitchams Corner is not hard to navigate at all its all a bit idiot proof now with the road markings and billions of traffic lights!
