hair and makeup, one person or separate,

jen-lou, 16 October, 2014 at 19:28 Posted on Planning 0 22

I know I posted the other day about makeup trials, and thanks for the input, I will make sure we all have a trial, but, ive been looking into this part of the day more, and was wondering, for those who are getting other people in to do their hair and make up, are you having the same person doing them both or have you booked 2 different people? Im guessing if you book the 1 person to do the both it would work out cheaper, but I could be wrong. I have only really considered booking separate people and im not sure why, but as I was struggling to find somone just to do my hair I thought why not look to use the same person.

As I asked before, what have you decided, what have you found to be the pros and cons of either option.

As always, thanks in advance

The advice I give my brides is to book the whole service via one supplier. (Obviously a reputable, qualified one!)

The reason for this is that the supplier is then wholly responsible for providing the service according to your agreed timings. As a wedding photographer, I have observed that the key reason for a bride being late is hair & makeup being completed late. If you book separate suppliers they may not work well together and they may blame each other if they are behind schedule!

If you book one supplier and more "hands" are needed, that supplier books her friends and colleagues - people she has probably worked with before. She remains responsible for their work as your contract is with her.

I'd recommend you get someone for hair and another for makeup. This way they can both work at the same time and swap - like a bridal conveyor belt! Lol! You could ask the hairdresser if she can recommend a mua it vice versa. That way you'll know they've worked together before.

I've got two people, one hair the other MUA for 3 of us. Not least because the MUA doesn't do hair and vice versa Smiley winking I guess it depends how many of you there are and if you can find someone who can do both well as they usually specialise in one or the other.

Thanks for the comments, you've all made some good points.

That was one of my concerns.

There will be 3 of us, me, my mum and my moh and I may ask for 1 of the little ones to get her hair done (she'll be 10 by that point).

I think I just didnt realise how much hair and make up would cost, the 2 muas I've spoken to will cost around £200 for the 3 of us including trials and then I've got to add the hair on top. I don't mind paying the cost just took me by surprise (ha, it had to happen sooner or later!), and to be honest I wouldn't know if I was getting ripped off or not by that price as I do not have a clue!

If I decide to get separate people, which I think I'm swaying more too, I'll take your advice and ask them to recommend someone for hair too.

My MUA is doing my hair. I wanted a proper MUA and I wasn't that bothered about the hair as I am not having a complicated up do and I didn't want to pay two lots of travelling fees. It was also cheaper overall than trying to get two separate ones. When I have been to balls in the past I have always used a MUA who also does hair and it hasn't been a problem. It's not like you need a proper hairdresser to style hair - you need someone who is experienced in wedding styling rather than someone who can cut and colour.

I don't think there is an issue of timing - normally they put heated rollers in and work on your makeup whilst your hair is cooking. Like Paula said - if they need more hands they will bring in people they have worked with before as a team. Have you ever had someone working on your makeup whilst someone was simultaneously doing your hair? I did for my boudoir photoshoot and it wasn't pleasant. The hair person was pulling my head one way whilst the MUA wanted it to be kept still. You could tell than there was tension between them as obviously it was difficult to keep still when someone is styling your hair. They clearly didn't get on and I wouldn't want that on my wedding day - so if you do choose separate make sure they have worked together before.

I don't think having one to do both will be the timing problem you think it is. They do this all the time!

I've booked a lady who will be doing both. Had a chat with her the other week and not once did she mention timings being a problem, so it never occurred to me it could be. Yes she's trained in wedding hair more and that seems to be what shes most excited about, but she equally gave enough time to discuss makeup and the merits of airbrush foundation. People who do both obviously have a lot of experience of doing both, so as long as you've seen pictures of their previous brides or spoken to them then shouldn't be an issue. And i think it does work out cheaper for one person to do all.

Personally I looked for someone to do both purely because it's simpler, the thought of another pair of hands there in the morning seemed excessive and potentially stressful. But great bonus that my lady's so nice! Have a look around and chat to them, you could be put at ease to find someone who does both.

I suppose it depends on the business - I'm having my actual hairdressers do my hair, my 3 bridesmaids and my mum. They also own a beauty salon (where I get my nails done) so she is doing all our make-up! Perfect really!

I am having a make up artist and a separate hairdresser. I thought about having one person to do both (it's me, my MOH one bridesmaid and possibly my mother) but I want someone who knows what they are doing, not a 'jack of all trades' who may be a bit good at both but brilliant at neither !

Also. god forbid one of them was sick - at least i'll have the other! (I am a stress head but it's a good point that was raised by my mother!)

Where are you based? I have found a brilliant make up artist in Birmingham (but she does the Midlands generally so may also travel...) who is really reasonably priced and she also provides a complementary touch up kit for the bride in the price. I paid £50 for my trial and then for me and two others on the day it is only costing £100 - which includes a mini touch up kit for me - bargain! : )

I was well happy with the results from the trial and she made me feel really relaxed which is important for me as I'm a stress head!

She works mainly on recommendation - was recommended to me actually (so it obviously works!). I'm happy to give the details to anyone who wants to msg me.

    Good luck!

Thanks, but that's a bit out of the way for me (i'm in Liverpool)

Got to say, the more comments I get the more it gives me to think about. I may contact our photographer and see if she has any recommendations for people.

Personally I'm doing my own makeup and so not going to book someone to do everyone else. However, if I was having both...

These are the two reasons I would probably hire two separate people.

With the comment about having your hair and makeup being done at the same time, I take simultaneously to mean that one person has their makeup done while the other has hair, rather than both being done on one person at once, if that makes sense!

    Hope that helps Smiley smile

I've booked 1 person to do both hair and make up for both me and my 2 bridesmaids.

@jen-lou I found 2 during my research that I really liked and i'm not that far from you. I've looked at pictures on their websites/facebook and chatted to one of them. The one I picked is Michelle Sisson she's based in Worsley, Manchester so may well travel to Liverpool. Its only down the East Lancs. xx

I had one girl to do both, for myself and 2 bridesmaids. She came the night before to do our nails, and on the day she started at 7:15 to make sure we were all done in time, as we were setting off at half 12 and the tog was leaving at 12, so we needed to get into our dresses. I would definitely sat if you have lots of bridesmaids you need 2 girls

I'll have 3 BMs, one of whom has extremely sensitive skin, so I'm going to ask a friend who is a professional MUA and hairstylist to do our hair and makeup. Natural is the keyword, so none of it should be too time-consuming. In fact, my MOH will probably end up doing her own hair (she's fussy lol).

My hair salon offers the whole package so I've booked for hair and make up for me, mum and my 4 bridesmaids at a cost of £650. For this I get a free hair and make-up trial and on the day they send 2 hair stylists and a make-up artist to the house first thing in the morning and they stay until we are ready to leave making sure all veils, head dresses, hats and fascinators etc are perfectly in place x

Definitely, anyone can choose separately for hair and makeup. You can choose David Rozman Hair Salon for your hairstyle and hairdressing because they are the best hairdressers in Manchester.
