Hair colour- time to go lighter?

Roobarb, 31 March, 2009 at 11:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I have dark brown hair but sadly have lots of grey ☹️ a trait inherited from my mum and grandad who both were totally grey by my age - I am nearly 36 (I've got off lightly compared to them at least I suppose). I used to dye it myself but my hairdresser basically told me (very nicely of course) that (a) I was sh1te at it and (b) I had too much grey to keep getting away with it so I get it coloured at the salon now. It's another dark brown shade, a bit richer than my natural shade and I'm generally v pleased with it.

However I only got it done a month ago and now my roots are starting to come through, and there's so much grey ☹️ and because the rest of my hair is so dark it looks very obvious. I'm going to have to buy that root touch up stuff, as I can't afford to go to the salon to get it done every month.

Do you think if I went a shade or 2 lighter with my colour it would make the grey root growth a bit less obvious? Trying to decide what to do next time I go and get it done (probably in about a month or so, before my son's christening)

?

I have no idea but will read this with interest. My hair is also dark brown, and I swear every white hair is like that advert years ago, they stand out so much !

I put a lighter rinse through my hair ages ago, and got big dark roots with some grey through it anyway, which looked worse. I guess it depends how much grey you have.

I dont use the root touch up stuff as I didnt rate it, I use superdrugs natural dark brown and just measure it out. It does a few touch ups and is a lot cheaper.

    Yes, definitely.

I'ver ecently hadd some highlights put in my dark brown hair - they do it in such a way that the grey hairs are the highlighted ones, so it is less obvious when it grows through.

I lightened my hair slightly last week, I have been using a natural brown shade but thought that now the sun is beginning to shine for longer I'll take it to the next level. It looks good and has covered my badger-ness rather well indeed.

I'll probably stick with this for a few more months then get some highlights in July/Aug.

If you dont mind me asking, what colour of highlights did you get?

My greys are a bit erratic, at the parting and then underneath which is weird. I just wouldnt know where to start with highlights (and I would need to find another hairdresser as even a cut and blowdry in mine costs me a fortune!)

They're sort of dark honey coloured, I suppose.

? all. Will look into highlights but if they're vastly more expensive than a whole head colour it will need to wait till I am back at work. Sounds like a poss way of keeping my lovely dark brown for most of my hair though ?

I would definitely go for highlights, they are good at disguising grey and you don't end up with the dark root problem

I have the same problem- Very dark brown hair and at least an inch of grey all over ?. Root touch up last about a week! by hair grows so fast. I may go a shade lighter/warmer soon, as i don't like highlights. It also depends on your skin tone, i'm super pale.

Maybe put a shout out for LP
