Hairdresser for Afro Caribbean/Mixed Raced Hair

soon-to-be-Mrs-King, 20 March, 2012 at 15:05 Posted on Planning 0 11

One of my bridesmaids was going to do my hair for the wedding but we are now thinking that it is just not going to be practical because of timings on the day and we do not want to rush and get all stressed, so I am now back to looking for a hairdresser at very short notice (the wedding is 30th June).

I am having a problem finding one, as the ones I have contacted do not do my hair type, I am mixed race black caribbean/white and have tight curly hair. Can anybody recommend any hairdressers in London/Surrey that caters for afro caribbean hair?

Thanks

You have the same hair type as me! I'm not sure what part of London you're in but I get my hair cut at The Salon in East Ham. The lady that used to do my hair (Sharon) also does wedding hair, but I think she has gone freelance now. They had a few hairdressers there though and they may well be able to get in touch with her (I hope so because I'll need her myself next year!).

    Good luck!

Hi, im sorry but I don't have any recommendations just wanted to ask how you are planning to have your hair done? Im mixed race as well but my hair is straight at the top then wavy at the bottom, I normally get it permed (it either that or straightening which ruins it) so its tight curly like yours but think id like loose curls on the day. I normally go to a white hairdressers as my hair is a bit frizzy but not Afro but I'm worried they won't be able to make it hold all day on a loose curl - are u having yours loose?

Sorry just to add I'm from South London area.

Thanks Katscamel that would be great.

Bee26, My hair is mixed race curls too so not afro but not white. It is such a pain as black products can be too heavy for my hair and white products are not heavy enough. My hair is not tight afro curls but more ringlet curls if that makes sense. I am planning on having my hair straightened with loose curls put in and want a half up half down style.

I had a hair trial with a lady that normally does white hair and although she got the style ok the products she used just wouldn't be able to hold my hair all day.

A couple of people have recommended a company called Nu Woman www.nuwomanbeauty.co.uk apparantly they specialise in black and asian hair and makeup and from reading reviews on other wedding sites the brides have been very happy with them. I have contacted them but their prices are quite expensive, but i think i'm going to book a hair trial with them and see how it goes.

If you hear of anything else let me know.

I used to live in Streatham Hill and there is a hairdressers there that are amazing. Its called 'All about Hair' and they are fantastic. There are also a few places in Brixton and Croydon that are very good.

I have the exact same problem with hair products. I dont doubt that my hair could be done how I wanted it its just keeping it there all day! My friends are all jealous of my hair but i wish it was just one way or the other - i cant tell u the amount of times ive been turned away from hair salons cos theyre scared of messing up my 'obviously relaxed' hair - its not relaxed they made that judgement by my skin colour without even looking properly at my hair!

Let us know how the trial with Nu Woman Beauty goes - how much do they charge for the trial?

    Hi,

Try Josh's Hair & Beauty in Croydon on Church st near Argos. They do Black and European hair and a few of my mixed race friends go there. They're particularly good for styling too.

Let us know how you get on!

My hairdresser/make up artist has hair like yours. She is fantastic and will come to your house. She lives in Catford but will travel. I'll send you her details if you're still looking.
