hairdresser recommendations - manchester/stockport

teenybash, 20 November, 2008 at 10:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I reeeeally need a haircut. i have a frightwig and it needs sorting out.

i've had a lot of bad luck with hairdressers recently and even my standby/failsafe man in Cork had a good old hack at my hair the last time i went to see him.

Does anyone have any recommendations in Manchester or Stockport? Ideally, i'd like someone who would be able to either listen to what i want or recommend something that would suit me. i've been to HCUK on Deansgate and had a bad cut. i've been to some random hairdressers behind deansgate and had a really, really bad cut. i've been to another hairdressers on Piccaddilly gardens (Nicky Oliver) and had one good cut, and then one atrocious cut (a week before my wedding ?). it's getting beyond a joke now.

so - any recommendations? any salon or particular stylist?

tia

I've recently been to a local one in Northenden which was good. They're called jfm hairdressing, on Palatine Road.

    Hiya,

If you don't mind travelling out a bit, I go to a place called Tru Professionals in Gorton. It's run by 2 girls who used to work at Nicky Oliver. I used to go to Nicky's regularly, but after they left, my hair was hacked to pieces. The shop is in Fitness First gym so you don't have to go into the depths of Gorton!

    HTH?

    Both - thank you.

where is northenden? is it easy to get to from city centre?

do the hairdressers you both mentioned listen to what you want? my biggest problem has been asking for a particular cut and getting something the stylists fancied doing instead.

my hair really misbehaves. it is fairly wavy (but not really curly-curly) and if i get layers cut into it, i end up with horrific spaniels ears hair when it grows out just after a fornight or so and it just gets big and wide and all i can do with it is, well, tie it up. i can use straighteners, but the hair tends to rebel by the end of the day and the curl comes back. anyway, the last couple of cuts (with nicky oliver stylist and the Cork man) both people cut layers into my hair despite me saying "No layers please". i now look like Brenda Fricker with slightly longer hair when i wake up in the morning.

anyway, i suppose i'm looking for someone who gives a good cut but who also listens. is this the holy grail of hairdressers? am i likely to find them in manchester city centre or stockport?

I had a really good cut recently at the wella training academy, 82 king street, and it was very reasonably priced too. My old office used to be in the same building, so I've used it a few times for blow dries, and I had one excellent colour too.

Both Sam & Davina at Tru Professionals are ace, I don't think I've ever had a bad cut from them. It is expensive though.

If you wanted to go in beforehand & discuss what you want they do this aswell, I think it kind of puts people at ease!

There's also a mahogany in king street- I used to go to mahogany in oxford when I lived there and they were always excellent. try taking in a picture of the style you want- then you have something concrete to point to if, at the end of the cut, it doesn't resemble what you'd asked for (obviously taking into accout things like hair thickness, head shape etc. ?). I've found that the vast majority of hairdressers (especially ones with a franchised brand to protect) are fiercely keen to protect their reputation, so if you are not happy with something, you must let them know and give them the chance to remedy it. In the interestes of fairness to them, you should also be as clear as possible with your instructions. I do sympathise though- I've had a few shocking bvarnets in my time (and I've also done the whole 'I love it, I REALLY love it' thing, whilst mentally trying to locate the nearest paper bag to put on my head). ?

Ah, lou, i really do try to be clear when i go - i go armed with photos, and say what i'd like and what i really don't want (the layers) and why. and then i end up with the same frigging layered shoulder length hairdo that looks nice in the salon but then morphs into a fright wig by the next day.

saying that, the last time i went to the Cork man, i showed him the shocking state of my hair in its untamed form and he sucked his breath in through his teeth in a shocked manner, sent me off to get it washed and then absentmindedly hacked at my hair. i was so mesmerised by him saying i had a lovely scottish accent and that i was beyooootiful so it didn't matter if i couldn't use a hairdryer that i wasn't paying enough attention to what he was actually doing to me. ? am so easily flattered!

    lesson learnt though.

    ?

i didn't realise that there actually was a nicky oliver... the boy who butchered my hair the last time i went there was short, skinny, and talked non-stop about his mum, his pony, and getting drunk with his friends.

i once had my hair brushed by Charlie Miller (hairdressing magnate). lucky ol' me.
