Hand cancelling invitations...anyone?

KannyBride, 10 October, 2011 at 16:59 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello brides

I have just finished writing my beautiful wedding invitations, I can’t wait for people to see them!

I have read on countless websites that you should ask the post office to “hand cancel” the stamps – so they don’t go through the sorting machines and leave ugly marks all over the invitations (or worse - ruin more elaborate invitations).

Has anyone had any success with this? I’ve been to two post offices and they both told me that they can’t do that anymore. Admittedly, they were both in central London but I just wondered whether anyone else out there managed to find a kind post office to do this for them?

Or am I being too pedantic and should I whack them in the post box?!

Thanks ?

Never heard of this! Do you have particularly elaborate invitations?

We asked about this and they said no, it's all done at the sorting office or wherever now, so not an option. Didn't bother us as our invites aren't that elaborate, but if you're definate that you want this then maybe try enquiring directly with royal mail?

Hmm, that's as I thought, thank you.

Our invites are actually very simple (no embellishments of any kind) but I just wanted our guests to receive pristine envelopes without the Royal Mail battering them with their clunky machines. As my fiancé pointed out, nobody remembers the envelope an invitation comes in so it's probably not worth the bother.

Seems it's one of those silly wedding conventions that makes not one jot of a difference!

    Hoenstly - just post them...

I am a fanatic for detail but I would never notice whether or not the envelope was prstine ... don't worry about it and just pop them in the post box!

I don't mind the marks left by travelling letters - I think it adds character! However, if it makes you feel better, we received all of our RSVPs back with barely a mark on them (I even considered peeling the stamps off for reuse - shhh) so maybe that's the state in which our invitations arrived?

I wouldn't worry too much about Royal Mail machines... it's the way the posties batter stuff that worries me!

I once had a magazine with a CD on the cover bent in half to get through a letterbox. I don't know if you've ever tried bending a CD in half until it snaps but it requires quite a lot of effort and it's pretty damn obvious that it's not meant to be bent.

If you're worried, personally I'd "double envelope" them. Write the full name and address on a suitable hardbacked envelope, then write the first names on the inner envelope that contains the invitation. That then means any abuse is done to the outer envelope, and of course being card backed it has a little more protection against getting mangled in transit.

I think the state of your invites when they arrive isn't that dependant on how they're cancelled, more how they're handled by the s/office and postie, and u can't control that. I'd say just post them as normal and you'd be v unlucky for any of them to be damaged on arrival

    Hi,

Just a thought as my mail came through my door this morning. The dog run off round the house with an envelope in his mouth putting teeth marks in my letter. ?

You could prob take all the effort in the world to make sure they leave your hands in prestine condition. But at the end of the day you dont really know who is delivering them the other end and what lies behind the door lol.
