Hanging striped wallpaper sideways!!

Specialkat, 6 September, 2008 at 01:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I have finally picked the wallpaper for my bedroom and have picked a striped design. The problem is I want to hang it horizontally instead of vertically. Any ideas on how to do this making sure it is hung straight? My H is banging his head coz it's taken me months to choose and now I've picked one but want it hanging the opposite way to what it should be!!!

Can't say I've tried it, but I'd think you would need at least a spirit level and lots of pencil marks - plus about 3 sets of arms !! LOL

I've seen it done in a picture in one of those big fabric/wallpaper sample books you get from interior designers/curtain makers - so it is possible, but I would imagine it would be more of a job you'd ask a proffesional to do as it would be quite tricky. As Fernie said you'd need at least 3 arms to hold it up!

Without intending to sound awful - are you sure about hanging striped wallpaper sideways? it sounds as if it isn't something that people would normally go for...

obviously if it suits you, go for it! just the last bit of estate agency wriggling its way out of me i suppose ?

I think it can look really good if you do it right, since I posted on here I've been trying to decide where I could do it in my flat! I'm really liking this particular one

As ceilings/floors are invariably not parallel, you will probably end up with the stripe running 'off' at the top and the bottom.

I love stripey wallpaper. You could always paint the wall and hang one roll of paper across it, then a gap then another roll. That way, you'd get away with the wall not being straight.

I hope I've explained that right ? I've seen it done and its looks fab (honest)

It will go tits up if your walls aren't exactly the same height all the way around your room.

We've got horizontal stripes on one wall (and vertical on the opposite) but I have no idea how it was done as the decorator did it. I think it's becoming the "in" thing just now - I would never have thought of it but we had an interior decorator in and it really looks fab.

Would you like some curtains to match? I ordered these and thought the strip went the other way. I'm sure you'll agree, they look sh1t. They cost a bloody fortune and I hate them.

The wallpaper is similar to that harlequin design but not such bright colours. It is dark brown, cream, light brown with a thin stripe of gold seperating them. The stripes are only going on one wall and the rest will be plain cream.

Eleda, if there wasn't the turquoisey colour on your curtains I'd be having them!!

My H is gonna hang the paper with help from his bro so I think I might buy them a spirit level and hope they stay off the Jim Beam!!!
