Has anyone ever asked for cash back at the checkout and not realised till too late that it's been charged but not handed over?

Lumpy Golightly, 6 June, 2008 at 23:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

This happened to me tonight - fifty bloody quid. I should get a phonecall in the morning to tell me if their till was over, but what if it isn't?

Yes - I went straight back. They tried to fob me off by saying I'd have to wait till end of business so they could see if the till 'tallied' but I stood my ground and made them cash that till then (it doesn't take long and has little effect on their business).

I know anytime I get a cashback, I get a receipt and initial the cashiers receipt which they keep in their till.

I would phone in the morning and explain. If their till isn't over, I don't know if they any other way of proving that you didn't get your money.

I tried that, but they said there was no-one in the cash office. I wish I'd been firmer now but I was really upset. Mr G rang them afterwards and they told him exactly the same thing.

July - I went straight back in, that's why they're ringing me. They didn't ask for me to initial the receipt and I can't remember if this branch usually does.

I pulled all the 'customer is always right, your mistake' lines I could think of. It did take some doing!

If they don't ring you first thing get on to them ASAP. The till will only not be over if the cashier pulled a fast one and pocketed the money. Did s/he initial the cashback?

Oh right, didn't realise you had went straight back in to the shop. Surely the cashier should have realised. Hope they ring you tomorrow.

Oh - and whenever I ask fo cashback now I always ask for denominations so e.g. if £50 I ask for 3 x £10 - makes you both think about the cash and more likely not to forget. Doesn't help now I know but for future ref...

No, no initials at all. He was a bit of a buffoon to be honest - offered to help me pack then didn't, forgot to put my apples though and whipped my debit card out of the machine half way through me putting my pin in so he could add the apples, then broke the cahs-back routine by inspecting the mobile phone voucher I'd bought because the ink was low. He was asked whether he remembered and said he definitely gave me the cash.

Its really easy to forget to give the cash back and forget to make sure you have taken it. If there isnt anyone cash office trained in then they cant do anything about it as there wont be anyone to cash up the till to check. Unless the person remembers forgetting to hand it over sadly they wont hand any cash over with out checking (too many people try it on).

Im sure they will call you in the morning. Annoying though.

Sure, I can understand that in a way - I suppose I'm most annoyed because the boy was a dick anyway and because the section manager was condescending towards me. And I'm worried that there'll have been other mistakes and my £50 won't be there for some reason...

I did it once and didn't realise until the following day when I went to spend the cash! I went into the shop that night and had to show my receipt and fill in a form, then went in the next day and was given my cash. That was £10 in Sainsbury's.

I've been on both sides really.I was a cash office supervisor and we often had people try it on when the till was correct. It's annoying but sometimes it is possible to cash up the till at that point, if the right people aren't available. And after all it's the fault of both the cashier and the cutomer, as both have forgotten.

I've also been on the other side, where I didn't get my cashback.I left my details and they phoned the next day to say the till was over.

Actually my H had a similar incident today where a lady said she was shortchanged. He did cash the till up then, but it showed as £200 down as a cashier had made an error. He asked the lady to leave her details and he would contact her and send the money, but she huffed and puffed and stormed out the shop saying she knew she was right and it didn't matter.Sure enough, the till was over but she hasn't left her details.

I would probably feel the same way, some dodgy characters pocket the cash (sorry not helping am i!??) If they don't cough up I would contact your bank and explain, you might be able to get them to sort it out. Sadly most people that work in places like this are students or erm less intelligent characters and don't care.

It is, isn't it? I've worked in retail - as a student. And i DID care, and I'm NOT 'less intelligent'. The boy who served me probably was a student, and his mind didn't seem to be on the job, but it's a bit unfair to suggest that most of the staff are like that.

Happened to me once, they said their till wasn't over but gave me the money as "goodwill" anyway. It was only a tenner though, and they made me sound like a thieving beeyatch!

That's exactly how they treated me today. "We don't doubt your word but the cashier is certain he's given it to you..."[:'(]

Yeah perhaps I am being harsh, I worked in supermarkets a lot myself and pretty much nearly all the people I encountered didnt give a toss, lots of the people we've seen recently dont either. Obviously a lot of people do care about their jobs and the people they serve, but im my experience many dont.

Oh no, I hope you get it ? if I hadn't got mine it was only a tenner, annoying but a different kettle of fish to 50 quid.

It's so easily done though. Esp since chip & pin came in, a lot of places don't get you to initial.

i've forgotten my cashback before but didnt go back to claim it.

I only realised the following day when I went to pay for petrol and had no cash. I wish I had rang to see if I could still get it. I didnt think about the till being over as proof

I did it once in Somerfield - it was only a tenner but I was a stoodent at the time and virtually never got more than a tenner at the time out the bank!

the Somerfield manager also told me the cashier remembered giving me the money (strange, given that the manager never asked me what time I was in, what I looked like, what I bought etc) and that the till was balanced, but agreed to give me £10 in vouchers, which I thought was a fair compromise.

I felt sadly suspicious that the checkout operator pocketed my tenner.

This is why I hate working retail. It's difficult to convince customers that I am not a complete idiot, despite having an honours degree.

Have they phoned you back yet, Lumps? How frustrating.

If a customer questions us about giving the wrong change (we don't do cashback where I work, but I should imagine that it'd be the same procedure if anyone reported a discrepancy), we have to do a till spot check there and then, regardless of if oher customers are waiting.
Also, whenever I have had cashback, I have had to initial the receipt to say that I have had it. If this isn't standard practise everywhere, it should be, for this very reason.
What happened to 'customer is always right'?

Zoe, I am actually really annoyed at your comment. What a condesending attitude. Not everybody who works in retail is a student or 'less intelligent' as you say. How rude.

When I worked for a supermarket and this happened we'd give vouchers if the till balanced.
