Has anyone ever had a wedding dress made and designed?

Katie, 13 March, 2022 at 08:34 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 7
Hi everyone!

I am currently searching for the perfect, dream wedding dress and have found a design that I have absolutely fallen in love with and can’t stop thinking about! However the price tag is way way out of my budget!!
So I was wondering has anyone ever used an independent dress maker to design and then make their dress for them instead of buying one from a wedding dress shop?

I’ve not done this myself, but I’ve seen quite a few similar queries and it sounds like having a dress designed is often more expensive 😕

It might be a better bet to investigate other designers, you might find something very similar that you love just as much - if not more!

I am very fortunate that my mum is making my wedding dress so I have designed my dress and had it made however i would say this is definitely a more expensive option if it’s not a family member

I haven't personally, but I considered it and found three across the whole of the UK that I considered to be reasonably priced.
However, I was looking for alternatives to traditional dresses, and though all of these are specialist wedding dressmakers, they're also all "alternative".

From what I can tell, they'll pretty much do what you want, though - though you might not be able to get them to "copy" a design...

I did this first time round and it was a disaster! IMHO Don't do it. Wedding dresses are specialist tailoring/dress making. You're looking at high end fabrics and structures a lot of dress makers don't have the experience to make. If they do, they will charge you for it and it will still be expensive. Also some dress makers will not copy a designers work because they might think its a bit cheeky to steak and copy designs.

If you decide to go ahead you need to make sure they have a good history of wedding dress creations. Ask for portfios. Ask to speak to previous customers. Look at reviews.amd make sure your negation on alterations and fittings are water tight and locked down!
If you cant guarantee all that are you willing to risk it? Or would it better to find a dress in your price range? Food for thought. HTH

Yes! I would not have had it any other way. There's something irreplaceable about having a completely unique dress.
My dress was made abroad by a friend who works as a dressmaker and her team. In the UK, few businesses do have the skillset to produce a detailed wedding dress (unless you have a very big budget and can afford couture).
But there are many countries with a bigger tradition of sewing and many skilled dress makers. My dress was absolutely stunning, with exquisite lace work, beading and sparkles, 8 layers, a long train, buttons the whole way down the back... All for less than 1000 pounds. Yes it was a leap of faith as I sent my measurements and didn't get to try it on but it was perfect. It was made from start to finish in 3 weeks and I received pictures of each stage.
If you don't know anyone check out Etsy. There are lots of vendors with very good reviews and affordable prices.

Two of my friends had theirs made by a seamstress in Leigh on Sea (not sure if that helps) and their dresses were amazing! Personal, unique, affordable. Go have a chat with a couple and see how you feel Smiley smile

I got my dress designed and made by a bridal shop in Dublin called Mizz Rio bridal. Mags was amazing, she specialises in unique wedding dresses and in the first consultation I tried on all different tops and skirts and ended up smashing 3 different dresses together to get my perfect one. It was made in Turkey and it's excellent quality, only took 4 months and only cost around €1000 including the veil. I live almost 3 hours away so only went twice, the first consultation and then to collect my dress. I wasn't happy with the first veil and Mags happily swapped it and has been so great to deal with over the phone/email. If you can get a cheap flight to Dublin I would definitely recommend her.
