Has anyone got a budgie?

Sparkley, 9 October, 2008 at 12:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

My beloved Nan died on Tuesday ☹️

She has a Budgie called Sid ? she loved that Budgie. I want to have him, but i work full time and have a pretty full social life, which is why I don't have a pet.

He is so beautiful and says lots of things, he's really quite funny.

Has anyone had a Budgie? Are they easy to look after?

?

So sorry about your Nan Sparkley ?

I didn't have Budgies, but I had cockatiels, and I'd say they were pretty much similar regarding care. I had 2 and they both had their own cages, but I didn't keep the doors shut so they had the freedom to fly around. Most of the time they'd go out, have a good fly, perch on top of the kitchen door for a while, then go back in their cages - sometimes together, sometimes in each other's!

As far as looking after is concerned, I'd say they need cleaning out quite regularly (easiest way is to put newspaper down in the bottom of the cage and change it every other day or so), fresh food and water once a day, and if you're out, keep a radio on for company. If a bird gets stressed it tends to pull it's feathers out, so by keeping some background music/talking on, that'll sooth it.

If you're out all day and then most nights and every weekend, it might not be fair to take the budgie on. Bearing in mind your Nan may well have been house-bound, so it would have been used to having her around all the time. Something to think about?

We used to (well my sister did) and they are very easy to look after, clean the sand at the bottom of the cage weekly, give them seed and water daily, and let them out for a fly when you're home (with doors closed). Oh and get them one of those balls with bells in it, they like them!

Sorry to hear about your nan ?

He's got a fabulous cage and probably more toys/bells/swings/ladders that I have ever seen!!!!

My Nan wasn't housebound but she was in almost all the time, and if she did go out she would leave the radio on.

I could leave the radio on when I am at work. I don't tend to sleep at other friends houses, the bf always stays here as I don't like his bed ?

I think it would be nice to have him with me, I think Nan would like it too ?

Sorry to hear about your Nan.

Budgies are pretty easy to look after, I had two when I was little and they are rather cute! As long as they have plenty to do in the way of toys they will be fine!

Sorry, 'housebound' was totally the wrong phrase .. I meant at home more than it sounds like you are with work and social life!

Birds also like cuttlefish to sharpen their beaks, and little honey coated seed bells and stuff like that. The pet shops will have an array of foods and treats, and toys - although your Nan's budgie sounds like it has plenty!

    This might help .. https://worldofwater.com/lancashire-blackpool/

    Thanks lovely Peaches.

It looks like I have a new pet, hurrah!

Now, I wonder if I can teach him to say fuck off ?
