Has anyone had a dress made bigger?

Future*mrsP, 6 May, 2015 at 16:38 Posted on Planning 0 3

I bought my dress last year. Bought off the peg. Its a corset back and when i bought it i was fully aware that it was too small, probably by about a size. The shop assistant told me that it would be able to be altered to fit me. But now I'm starting to panic! What if she just wanted me to buy it.

I have lost a few inches since i bought it but i tried it on a few weeks ago and it still doesnt fit.

I know that zips can be changed for corset backs, but mine is already a corset. Does anyone have any experience of making a corset dress bigger?

Any reassurance greatly appreciated!

If it is a corset with ribbons/ straps/ ties (what ever they are called!) to pull it in and do it up i assume they would be able to add a panel in the back behind the lace up so no part of the body would be exposed (if that makes sense). I am sure that a professional seamstress would be able to alter it no problem or even try taking it to a dry cleaners as they may be able to offer some advice as they work with clothing and material. I think it should be possible though. Good luck.

Depending on the style of dress, it may be able to be made bigger without impacting the shape and look of the dress.

Sometimes an extra panel can be added to "let it out" to fit to size. Do make sure you go to a proper, experienced seamstress though.

Also be aware that letting a dress out tends to be a bit pricier than taking it in.

Don't worry about this too much. Usually, there will be a couple of inches seam allowance that a wedding dress can be let out by and also, you can have a seamstress create a wider modesty panel for you which will cover your back completely underneath the lacing if the one that comes with the dress is not big enough. Then breathe in and get ready to be cinched in ?. Good luck with this x
