Has anyone played pub golf?

Emsy Truff, 6 October, 2008 at 15:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

Disclaimer **I understand the dangers of binge drinking and am not recommending this as a good idea to anyone and will almost certianly regret my stupidness the morning after this event**disclaimer

I'm organising pub golf for Mr ET's 30th and we're playing 18 holes, instead of the usually more reserved 9 hole pub golf. I have run out of drink ideas at hole 14 so was hoping for some inspiration on here.

Normally I allow an element of choice such as stipulating a pint but people can choose whether it's cider, lager, bitter etc but this time I am being more presecriptive to up the ante on the competition side. I've done the usual lager, cider, spirits, wine, alcopops, shots etc and need some really creative stuff to sort the men from the boys. Any ideas people?

No idea - I'm too much of a lightweight. We thought about it a couple of weeks ago for a Christmas thing then realised we'd probably only manage 2 before being on the floor. Strangely I've seen a lot of groups playing it (dressed up) recently.

You can do 9 holes if you prefer but this is a special occasion so we're going all out. I did it first for a leaving do from a previous job (about 6 years ago) although last year was the year for pub golf, we played for my hen night, my sister's birthday and her hen night so were well practised. We almost never get to the end properly (or without missing a few holes because time runs out) but I want to golf cards to have all 18 holes on, so people can see the intended route and agenda at the start of the evening.

Any suggestions at all? They don't have to be specifically pub golf related, just ideas for drinks that are not obvious so I might no have thought to include already.

Perhaps you could all sit around behind the bike sheds and drink thunderbird whilst smoking fags from the 10 lambert and butler you had an adult buy for you from the newsagent?

Could you have something like a cocktail that includes a particular kind or spirit? Or a cocktail that has 3 ingredients?

Well, I'd manage a maximum of 4 and then I'd be hanging my head down the toilet ?

Thanks everyone, helpful and non-judgmental as always! Seriously, if it ended in trouble we wouldn't have done it more than once. It's a bit of a laugh.

Every time there's a story about binge drinking and social decay for the next 5 years, there'll be the same video of Emsy Truff and her mates with 'library footage' ?

Riiiiiight. So just because you put a disclaimer in your first post, we aren't allowed an opinion.

I still think your mad, I'm sorry if that's unhelpful and judgemental. And no, I've never played 'pub golf' and never will.

No absolutely not, I was responding to the assumptions made in the replies posted, which are way off the mark. I was asking a specific question, not asking for approval or trying to persuade other people to join in!

Yes, it is a real leap for someone to make that if you want 18 drinks in 18 pubs then the main focus of an evening is to get as rat arsed as possible.

Seeing as you're being rather humourless, can I ask what is unreasonable about the assumption that 18 alcoholic drinks of an evening in public may be antisocial?

I have to say I have played pub golf, but the last time I did was more than 10 years ago (gulp) when I was still at uni. It wasn't a pleasurable experience being that drunk back then.

Does Mr ET know you're planning this for his 30th? All the 30ths I've been to over the last few years have involved fair amounts of booze, but drunk over a long evening, with nice food and good company and not with the main aim of getting paralytic/blood poisoning.

Does he really want a mega hangover for his 30th?

Right, I had other things to attend to but hopefully this thread can be put to bed now as it's clearly going nowhere fast.

Yes he knows about pub golf for his birthday and is not worried about ending up in A&E, I wouldn't be planning something for his birthday that he would hate! It is played over an afternoon / evening, rather than expecting everyone to down everything in the space of a few hours and end up vomiting all over the pavement. There are rules for playing meaning that people can manage their own intake. I'm quite surprised that no one has come across a properly played round of pub golf before, we're not kids trying to pressure others into getting sick or falling over, in fact I think it was my Dad who originally introduced me to the game after playing with some work colleagues!

I'm not fussed about what conclusions you draw as I've never met anyone on here, but I think it's worth being clear that in all the times I've played this game there has never been a problem with violence or blood poisoning! Clearly, we wouldn't be playing it still if it had ended in tears before now. BGB - I've been drunk many times before but never been involved with anything that caused anyone else any bother, (at least not since my teenage years) and our friends are much the same so there will be no 'anti-social behaviour' from our party, you can rest assured.

Ignoring the binge drinking debate, do you know if any of the pubs on the route have a slush machine? In my university days the worst drink I ever had (and there were some great contenders) was half lager half slush. It's suprisingly horrible.

Ignoring the binge drinking debate, one option instead of going for all 18 holes, could you "do" 9 instead then stop in one place for the rest of the evening? After that many drinks, I doubt many people would want to move on. I've played pub golf and even towards the end of 9 rounds, it was getting too much - it took several hours to reach that point.

Perhaps one game you could play, which used to be a favourite of MrCrookshanks and his friends is Chase The Ace. Pack of cards, dole out, first person to get an Ace nominates a drink, 2nd person buys the nominated drink and the 3rd person has to drink it. Or any other pub or drinking games you can think of?

Wow, why does anyone care whether someone else is going on a pub crawl? We've all done this sort of thing- I don't understand why people are being so grumpy about it.

Anyway, my tip if you're doing 18 pubs is to keep the drinks small and offer a lot of options (and maybe some free passes to allow people a bit of a break)- it'll be a wash out if everyone collapses after the first ten pubs. In terms of drinks= lager, bitter, cider, red wine, white wine, G&T, vodka and orange, whisky, tequila shot, champagne, guinness, whisky mac, rum and coke, brandy, um... amaretto

Why is everyone making assunptions about 18 drinks?

The drinking doesn't get serious till you arrive at the 19th.......

What assumptions? That 18 alcoholic drinks is a lot? In Planet Lois that's not an assumption, it's a fact.

However, I can honestly say I don't 'care' that these people are going on a pub crawl. I am just extracting amusement from it.

Many Dylan Thomas fans evidently concur.... Although obviously they all have to be White Horse.

    Can you hear Wilde giggling?
