Hat Etiquette

sipper, 29 May, 2008 at 20:05 Posted on Planning 0 2

My mum would like to know what the norm is for hat wearing during the reception. Does anyone know? Should she remove it once we are seated at the reception or keep it on (it seems a shame to only wear it for the ceremony/photos....but then again, is it weird/rude to keep it on when we're eating?!)

?

I have been told that the hats are kept on until after the meal and the MOB should be the first one to take her hat off. Once she has then everyone else can follow.

Not too sure what happens if the MOB isnt wearing a hat like my mom!

I'd ignore the etiquette and just do what you want.

It is quite correct for ladies to wear hats to eat. It feels strange these days because we don't do it, but if she wants to keep it on at the reception, then that's fine. It's not weird or rude.

The tradition is that no one should remove their hat until the MOB has removed hers, although I think mostly, like Fenella says, people go with what they're comfortable with.
