Have to have mammagram - what should i expecT? UPDATED

pans, 9 February, 2009 at 07:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I have had a sore breast/hardness to it for about 5 months. I was aobut to go for testing but then got pregnant. Its not got better so I am booked in for an ultrasound tomorrow ( i only called today, last minute cancellation)

First i have an ultrasound, then i assume if they "see" anything i have a mamagram. Then if there is anything there they do a biopsi immediately. (private clinic and great health care over here).

I have no idea what to expect and im really quite worried and nervous, even though its probably nothing, im a bit pregnant and hormonal.

I will be away for 40 minutes now but will check back.

Thank you

UPDATED

Thanks a lot everyone. I went today and had to have an ultrasound but everything is fine.

Bloody hurt though and i didnt like the woman that did it because i asked her what she had "marked down" as she made lots of notes when scanning my left breast (which wasnt even the one i was asking about so it made me a bit concerend as she noted nothing on the sore one and told me it looked ok) and she said "i jsut had to take photos for the doctor". Well, of course you did, like you did with the right breast, but why make notes? So all of a sudden i was really nervous and thought there was something wrong.

But al clear. All good. Just some ducts that are prominent which could be whats making it sore.

Sorry, I meant to say, that if the ultrasound shows anything then i have the mamagram and biopsy there and then tomorrow and have been warned the appointment could take a maximum of 5 hours. (assuming i am unlucky enough that they find something). Which would be great to get it all out of the way that day.

In the uk the move has been towards diagnostic clinics where you have all the tests necessary and results on the same day when at all possible. I assume if the NHS can do it the australian private sector can as well.

I *though* that mammograms weren't usually recommended in women under 35/40 because the breast tissue is too dense. More likely to have ultrasound followed by maybe a fine needle biopsy.

    Good luck (pans)

    Hi neffi

thanks for that, i did think it was qite remarkable to have it all on the same day.

they did say mamagram though, i am "only"33 so am interested to see why they would do that if its not recommended. although austrialian health advice does differ from english (pregnancy especially)

I had to have one last year as i found a breast lump.

First i was called into a room to have a ultrasound scan it was quite a strange feeling as the lady had to press hard on the breasts.

Then i had to have a mammogram as a mass was found.I had to take my top off and lift one breast up,and lean on a machine while the picture was taken. It does not hurt at all. They did this to both breasts to compare them.

I then had to wait for results of the mammogran which luckily came out clear so no biopsy was needed.

I know it is a worrying time, but it is not as bad as you imagine.

I was in the clinic for a hour and got my results the same day.

    You will be fine.xx

My 35 year old friend went a few weeks ago because of breast pain. She was given a mammogram and ultrasound. She had a long day at the clinic but got her results on the day (which were clear) and the consultant said it was likely to be hormonal.

Sorry i can't offer any information about mammagrams, but i just wanted to wish you good luck. It's a tough thing to do at the best of times, let alone while pregnant and with [from what i gather from your posts] a pretty demanding baby already ?

At the risk of sounding like a stalker, the last post i read from you was where you were beside yourself that you might be expecting twins. Did you find out?

Thanks a lot tickle, thats really helpful. glad that you were all clear and nothing was found. my tits are really sore at the mo (being duffed up) so not looking forward to them pressing hard, i'll be in tears !!

i see why there is lots of wating around now. lets hope they just find nothing at the ultrasound so i can get back home. H has to take the morning off work to look after N so i really need to be quick (although obviously this is more important than his work!)

thanks neffi. i do feel better now knowing what to expect. Was feeling rather emotional after i had made the appointment which is not like me at all

    Good luck tomorrow.

I had to have investigations again just before christmas. am 36 but even though they'd told me it was going to be a mammogram when I showed up they said I was too young so they gave me an ultrasound. It's just like a pregnancy one, only they do your breast. I've had a few before as I'm a bit prone to cysts.

if it's a cyst and it's large enough they may try to aspirate it to drain it - a fine needle and then the fluid is drawn off. it's not too painful. with the smaller cysts they didn't bother.

let us know how you got on (and did you ever get my two emails to your yahoo?)

    x
