Having issues getting married!

James, 18 April, 2023 at 12:29 Posted on Planning 1 7
Me and my partner are planning on getting married in Cornwall in a church. Lovely little church in tintagel. The problem is we do not live there and have to do a 7 day tenancy. After going through hoops with the agency of a self catering cottage about signing the proof we stayed there, they finally contacted the owners and they said they are more than happy to do it. The registry person said yeah lots of people do it this way.

All good then, or so we thought. The registry office are now saying that they cannot accept the document the owners sent me (they don’t say why) and that the owners need to fill in the form that the reg office send and it needs to be signed the day we leave the premises. How on earth can they do that, they don’t live there, they are in Italy or somewhere like that!
I was assured by the registry that it would be fine doing it this way and now they are changing their mind and putting us through all this stress. No wonder less and less people are getting married in churches!
Has anyone else stayed in a self catering cottage so they can get married outside of where they live and have any advice for us? As at the moment it’s either ditch the church and get married in the venue we’re having the reception at (which I really don’t want to do) or ditch the whole thing and get married where we live (which we really don’t want to do!)
Any help would be greatThanks
James and Kirsten

Is this just because you are getting married in a church? I'm not aware of how the rules differ between church or licensed venue.
For a licensed venue you don't have to do any of that. You can get married wherever you like, as long as their is a registrar available in that location. The residency side only matters for giving notice because that must be where you have lived for the last week so that would be your local registry office.

    Hi Hayley,

Yes it’s because we want to marry in a church. I know the residency doesn’t matter if we get married in a hotel or whatever but we really want to get married in this particular church.
However it’s ok now, the owners of the self catering cottage have said they will get the cleaner to sign the document as the registry office have now said that they can do it as the are associated with the cottage.
So again, hearts in mouths for a moment but all ok now.

This sounds very different to the experience I have had getting married in a church.

I am getting married at my childhood church which is outside the parish that we now live in. All I had to do was get the church in my current parish to read our banns and provide a banns certificate to the church I am marrying in. This is all my church legally needed to allow us to marry there.

Asides from that the church I am marrying in sorted everything else out, I haven't had any contact with a registry office as the church handles all the legal side of the wedding and even sends off for our marriage certificate.

They are reading our banns currently and we are getting married in 6 weeks.

    Hiya Kirsty,

The reason you can do this is because you have a link to that church, you used to live there.
This is something the Reverend told me when we first looked into this. If we were to marry in Camborne, as I used to live there years ago, we could do it the way you have done it but we’re getting married in tintagel and have never lived there so we have to do it this way.
Thanks for your post though Smiley smile

I am not sure of the distances between those two places. But is it close enough that you can attend services regularly in the church you want to marry in?

I was speaking to a lady at my church who lives out of the parish and has never lived in the area, but she saw the church and really wanted to get married there. She lives about an hour away, but her and her partner now attend services regularly as the vicar said he would marry them if they attended regularly for the 6 months leading up to the wedding. This would establish a connection with the church.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but maybe worth considering if what your currently doing causes anymore issues?

Indeed, we looked at this too but it’s 3/4 hours away.

It seems to be ok now though as the people who’s cottage we are staying in have said they will get the cleaner to sign the paperwork and the registry office have said they are happy with this.
    So all good Smiley smile

    Hello,

James and Kirsten are planning on getting married in a church in Tintagel, Cornwall. They have to do a 7-day tenancy in a self-catering cottage and obtain proof of stay for the registry office. After some difficulty, the owners of the cottage have agreed to sign the proof of stay document, but the registry office now says they cannot ManageMyHealth Login accept it and that the owners need to fill in a form and sign it on the day James and Kirsten leave the cottage. The owners do not live in the area and cannot do so. James and Kirsten are seeking advice on what to do as they do not want to get married at the reception venue or where they live.
