That sounds lovely, and people wil be able to have a bit of everything. More likely to get filled up as well, sometimes sit down meals are so small for what you pay so I think your choice is fine. Bottom line is it is your day and as long as there is plenty of food your guests shouldn't complain or judge. It is sensible to not get into debt so well done on not getting carried away. You do what you want though - hopefully, your friends and family are coming to celebrate and support you as you make your commitment to each other. If they're going to get picky about the food, they're probably not the kind of people you should be inviting anyway as they don't sound very supportive! As long as there is enough food, the type of food is really down to the preferences of the bride & groom.

I think if most people were 100% honest they'd rather have a buffet of tasty food than sit through hours of a fancy meal, its just become the done thing. We didn't want that for our day either but I also know I'm a monster if I don't eat a proper meal so we're having 'pub grub' with the few people who will be at the ceremony then the pub is putting on a buffet for evening guests.
