Help - bridesmaid might not fit in dress - need HOF Ariella Sage Green dress

Rachel0203, 15 January, 2013 at 16:57 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi,

Need some advise! My sister one of the Bridesmaids got her dress and it was too small for her but as she had about 9 months till the wedding she said she would loose the weight as she wanted to do it anyway. So we bought the dress, but she hasnt lost the weight and the wedding is in 6 weeks!! What do i do? I am starting to get a bit stressed. Cant really just get new dresses as have got 4 bridesmaids all waering the same one to match. ☹️

They are not seeling these dresses anymore as we got them in the sale in the summer, so cant get the bigger size. If anyone else has used these same dresses and is selling a size 18 then let me know! It is an Ariella dress from House of Fraser, in a sage green chiffon material, strapless. There is the long and knee lenght ones, either would do!

I am going to speak to her tonight and mention in nicely as dont want to upset her. Do you think i need to be harsh? Or should i just trust her that it will fit on the day?

If it ends up she needs to get a bigger size of the dress she pays for it. She insisted she would lose weight, she didn't so now its on her. Nothing for you to get stressed out over love, she shouldn't have been so daft and should have been more realistic.

I agree that she needs to pay for a new dress or alterations (if possible) if she hasn't lost the weight, like she said she would.

I think OP posters problem is that a new dress can't be purchased because its been discontinued, and she has 4 other bridesmaid in this dress so she doesn't want this one to be in something completely different.

I really feel for you. To be honest, I'd say something, you have to. You need to just say look this dress doesn't fit, is it going to, if not then you need to be speaking to dress maker pronto about having panels put in etc so it does fit and she will have to pay for that.

Is she chief bridesmaid? Could you put her in a coordinating, different dress?

I wonder if a seamstress could turn it into a corseted back with a panel in, so it would fit... what a tricky situation though, I hope it turns out okay!

Just to clarify, how much weight are we talking here? If its just a dress size she could do kettlebells a couple of times a week and shed a fair bit. Its really good and effective.

You def need to speak to her. Depends how much weight she needs to loose, but only she will know if she can shed the weight in just a few weeks. Ask her what she plans to wear if it doesnt fit, as she might have already been thinking about this & have thoughts about options.

I'd get her to do the ringing around & pay for the new dress or alterations. Its not fair for you or the other BM's to pay up for new dresses for everyone, when this girl was unrealistic about expected weight loss.

I guess you have called house of fraser to check they dont have any old stock or outlet type stores? Ebay & preloved might have something. Most of the charity shops have specialist wedding stores, which not only sell 2nd hand goods, but often end of line items brand new. Its worth her doing a ring around to check they dont have the dress anywhere.

Thanks for the comments. Its not the money that is a problem, and she would pay for the alterations etc if they could be done.

Its not loads of weight, maybe half a stone and with 6 weeks left thats only like a pound a week. Its just she needs to do it, and not just think it will be ok. I know she is trying but she finds it hard.

Will speak to her, she will prob know if it can be altered as she is good at sewing and making clothes. I havent tried ring house of fraser but tried ebay and pre loved etc. Will try give them a ring, thanks for the idea!

I am sure it will be ok, but i have got enough other things to have to sort without worrying about that as well. She is the sort of person who leaves everything till the last minute, but thought she might have been better seen as this is for my wedding.

Preloved have a dress for £10 but it's size 14 to 16. It would at least provide material for alterations if you can find a good seamstress!!

Haha! A stomach bug sounds like a good idea..

Think i will just have to be tough with her and hope she does something to loose the weight quick. As there are diets that might not be good long term but get weight off quick.

I am trying to loose a few pounds for my dress fitting in a couple of weeks, so trying slim fast milkshakes for lunch with fruit! They are quite nice as well. x

Thanks Swampy, that could be an option buying another and using the material. As i have seen some the same on ebay but in a size 10.

If it is a zip back having it changed to a corset can give you as much as 4 inches extra across the bust and losen it up everywhere else. You will need fabric to make the back panel, loops and laces but as bridesmaids dresses are usually a good 4 inches long for most people you may be able to get the extra fabric from there.

You may also be able to let it out a little but the problem with chiffon is the needle holes will probably show but a good seamstress should be able to sort this out for a fraction of the cost of replacing any of the gowns
