Help! Damaged phone battery was smoking!

Phone battery started smoking, rightly or wrongly i put it outside and doused it in water (i know, I'm an ***** but panic) - it smoked and bubbled but now it has stopped and its just sat on the ground. I'm worried it could still go bang... can anyone tell me if its still likely to catch fire??
