Help finding a Photographer/videographer

Laura, 4 August, 2023 at 17:56 Posted on Planning 0 2
How do you decide on a photographer/videographer?

I have no idea on this profession, but I want to invest in this aspect of our wedding. It is important for us to find someone who has done a lot of autumnal weddings as we are getting married in October 2025. Other than that, we don't know what we are looking for and there are so many suppliers out there that it can be quite overwhelming.
How have you narrowed down your search to find the right photographer/videographer for you?

    Good evening!

    Firstly congratulations!
It’s important to have a look at many wedding albums. Usually if you as a photographer, they’ll send you a link to an online portal of previous weddings they’ve done; this is brilliant to reallt compare and contrast their work. You’ll get to see a range of seasons too which is great.
I appreciate it is overwhelming but I think to horde a really good photographer and what you want, you need to look at a fair few wedding albums of different photographers. This will really help you grasp what YOU are looking for as we all have different tastes and styles with photographer I.E more candid approach, light / airy, or rustic and orangey tones. As you start looking through portfolios and can compare, you’ll start to notice little things like how they position themselves and how they focus on their subjects etc. Once you find all the common factors you love, in one photographer that’s how you know their the one for you!
It does take time - but as you know, it’s a really important element so definitely continue to do as much research as possible. Additional to the quality of your photos, you want somebody you can vibe with on the day too - they’ll be the second closest person to you all day so you must get comfortable feelings from them upon your meeting or consultation email etc.
If you’re local to West Midlands I can send you a list of really good photographers if you wish. If not they do also travel. I’ve booked Bloom Weddings (they travel but based in Leicester) and they are outstanding, also they come in a team of two. Another incredible photographer UK based is Monkey Mole photography (he has a cracking sense of humour too) and RooStain photography.
Worth noting also, don’t worry too much about these ‘wedding awards’, most of them are self nominated or paid to be entered into a competition, so don’t mean too much.

    Hope this helps xx

As you have recognised the need to find someone who has experience in winter weddings means that you are half way there already.

The 25th is not yet "full blown winter" but is just before the clocks go back so depending on your venue it could be quite dark inside.

You may need to be looking at more experienced shooters because only about 20% are in the winter so it takes longer to build up winter experience. Then factor in 2 years of covid hardly any weddings took place. So someone shooting weddings for 5 years actually means 3 years and are not likely to of shot many in the winter - if any during only 3 years.

I can usually show couples examples of local Leicestershire weddings at their venue and at the same time of year because I have been doing this a long time. I also have a web page on my site with just bad weather/ winter wedding examples.

With google also click the images option and you will see more than just the paid adds on the first page.

When looking at indoor shots look at the general colour - is the dress orange or are you seeing lots of black and white. Is usually a good sign of someone who does not know how to colour correct or use flash correctly.

    Hope that helps
