Help! I can't fasten my dress without help!

BubbleBees, 6 February, 2015 at 15:25 Posted on Planning 0 15

My dress has arrived, and I cannot think how I can fasten it myself (wedding day will be easy enough as I can ask a family member to pop in and button up the back, plus I know it fits as I’ve tried it on in the shop) but I’d like to see it properly fastened, along with all the other accessories I plan to wear in August to check everything looks right together.

I’m a fairly reclusive person (and happily so) , and so I only have a couple of close friends who live 300 miles away from me. The same for family, so asking someone to pop round isn’t really an option.

My OH is a little superstitious – to the extent that he’s staying with his sister’s family the day before even though we have the venue booked for two nights, and doesn’t really want to see the dress before the day.

I plan to ask OH if he’ll do it up, so that I can see everything on together, but don’t really want to pressure him that way.

Does anyone know of a trusted ‘rent a bridesmaid’ type service who could come to me and help me dress and try everything together? Does such a thing even exist?

Can any of you lovely ladies (and gents) give me any advice?

@Kizzi10000 I'm near to Canary Wharf. Having a rare day off to try and sort a few things out.

@AprilBride15 as I tried following makeup instructions today and made my eye look as though someone had lamped me one I'll be booking a professional MUA. Do you think they'd be happy to? I'd not have a problem with asking on the day if they could help - its only about ten fiddly buttons that I thought I'd be able to do myself - my bad for not trying.

@SillyWrong I could, but its not really a wedding shop so I don't think they'd appreciate me turning up with a box of accessories and taking up space.

My W went to a funeral the other week and couldn't zip up her only plain black dress, she had to go knock on the neighbours (who we don't know) and ask her to zip it for her. She's no shame!! ?

If you were closer to me, I would come and help you, sounds like a fun afternoon!

Ask your MUA or hairdresser if they could do it with a trial.

There's a local dress/alteration shop near me which offers a dressing service for helping you fasten your dress. Could you maybe check places near you that offer this?

My MUA offers this as an additional service on the day (for a fee I think) so worth checking out xx

If you can ask a family member on the day, is there not one you can ask to come and have a special couple of hours with you to do this? Just a thought x

As others have said, what about a neighbor, bridesmaid, work colleague? Do you attend any sports clubs/hobby groups?

Could you meet one of your friends half way & have a weekend away, trying on your things at the hotel?

Failing that, I'd ring seamstresses or alteration places

lastly- get OH to do it with a blindfold!

Local dry cleaners usually have a dressing room for when they do alterations.....I am sure that for a small sum, they would help you out.....

How about this. You said help with button up - so that would be a zip first and then buttons ? - or rather elastic loops over buttons, as the buttons dont actually do a lot and just cover the zip, why dont you just do it up with the zip only and for your purpose you could attach a length of string to the zip so you can pull it up on your own

What Bill said .... You don't need to do the buttons up to check it fits and looks good with accessories ... tie a ribbon to the zip so you can pull up yourself x

Thank you everyone for your kind advice. In typical me style I've withdrawn rather than respond.

I've gone for a different dress, the first one wasn't hugely expensive, so I'll look to sell it, assuming the other one works!
