Help in finding a black dress!

Alice, 16 February, 2025 at 20:58 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 9
Hi everyone - I’d love your help!

I get married next May, and I’ve started the journey of finding an outfit for the big day.
I’m not an ultra-feminine person, but I’m 90% sure it’ll be a dress I’ll be wearing. I’ve tried a few one in a couple of shops, and have decided the style I love is a bardot, long-sleeve, fit & flare. Super heavy beading, no lace.
My only issue is I really really want to try on black dresses of similar styles, as I wear black most of the time and I just feel much more comfortable in that colour. It’s an itch I need to scratch before making the final decision.
I’m really struggling to find a shop that I can actually book an appointment and try on in store. Everything I see is online only; black, puffy, a-line or ball gown and “gothic” which is beautiful, but just not my style.
Any ideas would be really appreciated. I’m based in Manchester but happy to travel anywhere. Thank you x

You would probably have more success in going to an evening-wear shop rather than a brida boutique.

    Hi Alice,

I too am wearing a black dress and had a very hard time finding bridal options in this colour, but it is doable. You have a couple of options but you would have to travel as they're not local to Manchester. it also depends if you want an actual black wedding dress or if you'd rather go down the line of a 'prom dress' sort of vibe.

if you want an actual wedding dress then there is a bridal boutique called 'Hannah Black Bridal' located in Bedfordshire where you can make an appointment to try on a dress with them. they also have a website for you to peruse.

There is also 'Fairygothmother' in London who carry black and alternative wedding dresses you can try on by appointment.

Do not go with 'Stacee's of London' they make out they're a UK based company, but they actually operate from abroad and are awful to deal with (just read the reviews on trust pilot)

it's also good to ring around local bridal shops and see if they have any black dresses in stock or could advise on where to go to try one on. I was lucky in the end as my local shop didn't have any in stock but they did have a black dress stockist on their books where I could ask them to order a couple of options in and then try them on. I ended up going direct to the designer for mine but this was a massive help.

Thank you! I had a look into HB Bridal but found her custom style to be very ball gown/a-line-esque, which neither suit me. Found Legend Bridal however in Darwin so off to an appointment soon 😊

I went to Milan Bridal in leeds and tried on a black one shoulder dress and it was a fit and flare i think. It was amazing. Tried to find a photo of the dress on the website for you but i could not find it.

Have you tried checking out The Case of the Curious Bride in Manchester? They sometimes have non-traditional options, and they might be able to source something for you. Also, some boutiques offer custom dyeing services if you find the perfect dress in another color. Hope you find the one!
