Chief bridesmaid used to be the phrase for everyone. Then Matron of honour came into use for married bridesmaids. Now, I hear both chief bridesmaid and matron of honour used regularly, though maid of honour is still less common. I don't think it really matters though.

Thanks for your reply! I think I’m just going to stick with my original thought of Chief bridesmaid! Why’s everything so confusing 🤣🤣

I think it's because we are gradually becoming Americanised. Wedding showers, ushers instead of groomsmen, wedding favours, maids of honour...all things that have come from across the pond.

Chief Bridesmaid is the traditional UK term, however Maid of Honour (and Matron of Honour) while the American terms are becoming more popular.

I asked mine what they'd like to be called and they wanted Maid of Honour so that's what we're going with!

It's a similar situation with Groomsmen - that's the US term but I've seen it loads in the UK now. The UK tradition is for Ushers who could be from either side as the Groom traditionally only had a Best Man. Personally I'm using Ushers as the term for my Bridesmen so you can really play about with it and use whatever term you want to signify whatever you want it to Smiley smile

I’m having a maid of honour (my best friend) and my sister is my matron of honour as she is in her 40s! X
