Help. Should we book a celeidh band and a dj for the same time

Ashleigh, 5 March, 2021 at 11:18 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi everyone,

We are getting married next year and are having a ceilidh band for part of the evening since our family is all scottish and want everyone up and dancing, but we obviously can't just have ceilidh music. Is it normal to have the band and the dj/wedding band there at the same time and sort of alternate between the two since the dances can be tiring and people need a break?

Thanks

You can find mixed bands who perform ceilidh and normal songs but they tend to be more popular in Scotland, however some will travel for larger fee. Or there are some bands who just do the traditional ceilidh and it would probably be easier to co-ordinate your own music than another band.

I was really keen to have a ceilidh because of my family being Scottish but found it near impossible to get a combination band willing to travel to the South West for a reasonable amount on my date, so sadly decided to just hire a fun wedding band and get a piper instead for part of the day!
    Best of luck ?

We have a band that does both. So they mix in ceilidh or do it at beginning/ end and play rock/ pop in between. Seemed a good compromise as I am german and my fiance is scottish....

I'd recommend trying to find a band who will do both. I haven't been to a wedding with a ceilidh band but have been to ceilidh nights and they tend to have the first half with ceilidh music/dancing without breaks between dances. People just pick and choose what dances they want to take part in and what ones they don't. I imagine it would be similar for a wedding party. Normally the second half of the night is non ceilidh music.

Find some bands you like the sound of and ask them how it normally works and what they recommend. They'll know best Smiley smile

Definitely get a band who can do both. They can spend some of the time walking people through the formal ceilidh dances then just do the floor fillaz the rest of the time. I've been to a few like that and it's a great time.
