hen do dilemma

Alisha.B, 15 October, 2013 at 12:20 Posted on Planning 0 13

I hope this isn't seen as rude but I was wondering if anyone would like to share:

how much per person their hen do cost or is expected to cost?

and what you did/will do?

also has anyone gone abroad?

did you have issues with people not having passports?

Sorry for all the questions, Im trying to get an idea of what is reasonable to ask of people... Ive read the average amount is £153 but that seems very high to me and I dont think my friends could afford it as many are unemployed, students, mothers or in low paid jobs, I know a company that offers great deals for hen and stags so my options so far are:

just under £30 - local nightclub cruise and meal (+ of not needing passports)

just under £40 - 2 day international cruise with 5 hours in Europe doing an activity (great price for a group booking but need passports)

just under £80 - 2 days in Europe with hotel stay and travel (need passports and more expensive)

this wouldn't include drinking money (it would be up to the individual to pick how much to spend on 'extras' like drinking and shopping)

do you think these sound too expensive?

which would you rather be invited to as a hen?

thank you

No idea of cost. Would hazard a guess at maybe £100 pp for accommodation, then food/drink/etc on top.

We hired two self-catering cottages in the Peak District. Had cocktail and pizza night, a nature walk, a pub lunch, a BBQ, a pool tournament, lot sof wine, karaoke, games, etc.

Didn't consider going abroad. Where in Europe for £80 inc travel and two nights? And what type of hotel....

I don't know how much mine cost as my BMs organised it all and split my costs between them. I think it was probably well under £100pp though.

We had a picnic in a park in the afternoon with some fun crafty activities which they'd organised themselves, then dinner, then went to a burlesque bar. It was all in London, where most of us live, so we had enough sofa/floor space for all the non-Londoners to sleep. The following day we had a champagne afternoon tea.

I would be very sceptical of what you can get for that kind of money on a trip to "Europe" - doesn't it even specify a country?!

Yes it does specfy area but im still looking at options so im not 100% on destination yet but it would be Amsterdam probably although there are other options (mainly in the Netherlands) so not too far to travel

traveling by the same cruise ship as the second option, economy class with shared rooms which are very basic (but I doubt we will spend that long in the rooms when there are 7 pubs, 1 night club, 2 cinemas, multiple restaurants and a guided wildlife watching deck on board)

the hotel would probably be 2/3* according to the website, to be honest im not looking for 5* luxury im quite happy to be a travelodge kind of girl lol ?

2 girls on my course have been on the trip before and are booking it again, they said it was great for a short holiday

    I'm having 2

    - a local one which will be dinner and drinks for those who can't afford to or don't want to go away.

    - a weekend in Cardiff with a couple of close friends and my lovely mum. That one is costing about £40 each for 2 nights hotel plus meals and drinks. I doubt we'll do any of the usual hen activities as there's only 5 or 6 of us going to this one.

Both of your Europe options sound ludicrously cheap, what is the company? For mine we are going out for the night in London and have space for people to stay over if they want. I guess it will be about £60ish each (inc food/booze) or slightly more for the few that don't live in London as they will have to pay for their train fare.

I haven't planned a hen do yet but i'm hoping it'll cost little for people and we'll still have a good night.
I'm a mother myself and so is my BM and other ladies who'll be attending so for that reason alone we'll be staying local for it.
Also if people are a bit stuck for money I wouldn't want them spending too much on the hen do as weddings can cost even guests a fair bit of money with getting something to wear etc.

I'd want to spend a reasonable amount but not too much, but I wouldn't want to leave the uk.

Mine isn't arranged yet but my favourite idea so far is using a company who do treasure hunts/pub crawl around the city centre. We'd be in teams and race against each other. Would work out about £20 each max and then go for meal and drinks. So whatever that would cost. I'm not bothered about a big hen do, I just want everyone to have fun!

So I guess of your options I'd go for the first one, if it makes it easier for everyone to go, maybe arrange an activity in the day too? Or you could ask around your guests to get a feel of what would suit the majority.

The European cruises sound amazing value and if the goal is to be with your friends, be entertained and get drunk then either sounds fun! I think with the right company anything can become a great hen do!

I went to Paphos for the weekend with my mum and sister a few weeks ago, stayed at a lovely hotel with hydro circuit pool and had beach days, lovely food and cocktails. They paid for that but I would guess I. The region of £250 per person plus spends. I have a local hen night with all my friends and some other family in 11 days and that I imagine is around £50 per head including meal and wine. This is obviously more the mark for most people to spend on a hen night, any more than that and it's asking a lot of people, some will easily afford it, others will struggle but it is more achievable than a weekend away (and suits those with kids or other responsibilities better).

when my sister got married myself, her bestie and now SIL took her to Vegas as a surprise. Cost a fortune but we all wanted to go anyway and it was amazing! We again did the local thing for everyone else.

Whatever you decide upon, enjoy! ?

I have organised my MOH hen do and its cost £150ish pp.

This includes train to London, night in a Premier Inn hotel, matinee tickets to Dirty Dancing, tickets to Dreamboys on the night with food and a drink each and a personalised tshirt. I also split the cost of the hen and everyone paid towards her stuff so she didnt have to pay.

The extras they will need are tube tickets, lunch both days and drinks on the saturday night.

I also bought the hens costume, sashes, shot glasses etc but paid for all of this myself.

I don't know what we're doing but mine is £100 pp and that includes the activies, hotel on the Saturday night, lunch Saturday and breakfast Sunday. It's near my parents so anyone who wants to arrive on the Friday can stay at theirs and they will feed us on the Friday night. People will just need dinner on Saturday and drinks money. Hopefully thats OK. Everyone knows the cost up front and dinner will be somewhere will lots of options so will be budget friendly although as I don't know where we're going I can't be certain! I was going to pay my share but as my sister is organising it my Dad gave her the money for us.
