Hiring a large house, with a marquee

tumbleweeds, 5 of June of 2013 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hello,

I've looked at about 10 local venues, and all seem to be not quite right. Either they shut to early, too small, have silly corkage charges, or simply don't feel special enough.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with renting a big house with a large garden, and then getting a wedding marquee company / catering company to look after everything else? I'm thinking the day really can be as we plan it and not subject to the standard format.

Does anyone know where to look for a) Suitable venues (we're from Windsor / Berkshire so ideally close to here), and b) Great marquee companies that can set up almost anywhere.

Any help gratefully received!

Adam

    Hi Adam,

I'm not sure of your budget, but for a while we were looking at the Manor of Hurst, just near Twyford/Wokingham. There are six bedrooms, a church onsite, a swimming pool (!), and you can put a marquee up in their garden. You are also able to rent it for a whole weekend - making a real party of it. In the end, it was out of our price range, but it looks like it does everything that you are looking for. The website is here: https://www.manorofhurst.co.uk/

I looked into this briefly, its a great idea and would be so fun but found it to be way over our budget. If you google 'big houses to hire' there are sevearl companies that specialise in this. Good luck, let us know if you find anywhere!

I also looked into this but realised it would be over budget as marquees don't come cheap. However it can be a great way to really put your stamp on the day.

As Foo said, have a look for big houses rather than wedding venues. This type of venue may not have a marriage licence so you may have to look at getting married in the local church or registry office.

A few links to places that specialise in large houses:

As an aside - my cousin did something very similar but went for very basic marquees (i.e. no floors, heating etc). They were really just glorified versions of the kind you have at a garden party. They worked fine but wouldn't have done if it had been peeing it down. A little rain was fine, however. They had a contingency that if it was torrential the sit down wedding breakfast would be scrapped and everyone would just stay in the house like one big house party.

We looked into this when we first started looking for a venue. Quickly found it worked out more expensive than a hotel or other venue though. Also the thing that really worried me was having enough toilets and guests not having to go through other ppls bedrooms to get to the loo!
