HKLAP

Luthien, 21 April, 2008 at 17:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

I'll admit I have been doing a Joey-esque laugh whenever anyone has mentioned people holding knives like pens. Althought I knew what you were all saying, I just couldn't see how it could be done, so I became worried that maybe I held knives like pens. You don't want to know about the hours I have spent worrying about the way in which I hold my knife.

Anyhoo, this weekend the clouds finally parted and some light was shed on the situation when, whilst having a pub lunch, I spotted a man on the next table holding his knife like a pen! AND he was eating a steak! Never have I seen anything so weird (when it comes to cutlery) How the hell can you cut a steak holding a knife like that?

Believe me, you cannot imagine my relief! I know know that I do not hold knives like pens and nor does anyone I have ever known.

I too have worried that I might hold a knife like a pen without knowing. I am still not sure whether I do or not. I am also left handed which complicates my imagining of knives and pens (since I hold knife in right hand and pen in left). Yes, I am also rubbish with mental rotation and spatial awareness.

? Our office Christmas do was in Chiquito's. Dead classy, us civil servants.

Believe me Jellicle - you'd know if you did, it is so bizarre. You'd have to be aware that very few other people in the world actually do the same.

Hoobs - at least it was a work thing, we went there by choice. Well, our choice was Chiquitos or Frankie and Benny's - we were late for the cinema.

Definitely the lesser of two evils in that case, although I like the music in F & B's better.

I admit to having just grabbed a pen to make sure I don't do this. (I've checked before, but I am that paranoid) ?

Ok so a pen you hold with the end going over the back of your hand and a knife goes under your hand?

Http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/images/eti/knife.jpg This is how to hold a knife, if you held it like a pen, the handle would visable and would rest between your thumb and index finger.

People, people - stop fretting! It's not a covert action that you may do without realising, these people literally hold the knife like you'd hold a biro! It's utterly bizarre!

I'm ok Magic, how are you doing? ?

This is something I have worried about too, but now I can relax because my knife is always safely tucked inside my hand when I use it.

How do you have a knife over the top of your hand? How do you cut stuff without struggling? Too too weird.

I will make a confession here. When the whole HKLAP thing came about, I realised that I SOMETIMES held my knife this way.Not when cutting steak though.
However, with NickJ's mockery ringing in my ears, I have trained myself to hold it the correct Hitched way, with the handle tucked in.
Even now, I sometimes check myself to make sure, and everytime I think of Hitched?

You should visit the US...lots of people do that over here. What's even worse is the way they hold their fork with it!

I read somewhere that in the US it's the acceptable way.
So as long as I adopt a twang I'm ok?

I too used to till WTP pointed out it was incorrect, after we'd been married 2 years ?

    My mother does it too.

I mostly remember now. Americans hold cutlery really oddly, but I suspect this is because so much of their food is eaten with the hands. Also, my friend holds her spoon like a toddler, full hand grasp ? most odd to watch.

I don't think I hold my knife like a pen, but I think H might sometimes.

I missed the other thread-at the risk of being mocked, why is it wrong?
