Holiday help please - with sis and her kids (gulp)

Lady Lucan, 22 April, 2009 at 16:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Last year my sister and I left the boys at home and took her kids to Spain. Whilst we enjoyed the break the hotel was awful (stank of piss, no sunbeds etc) despite us paying a fair whack. So we want to erase that memory and do it again but I just don't know where to begin and I don't want to get it wrong.

Can anyone recommend a nice hotel preferably with kids club type thing and maybe an all-inclusive option with lots of kids 'stuff' nearby? (can you tell I haven't sprogged yet ?) We're looking at around the last week in August (ish) and the budget is between 2 - 2.5k. It probably needs to be North Europe but other than that we're very flexible. Can anyone help? Where have you taken kids that you've really enjoyed and have been able to leave them to their own to devices whilst being able to relax in a nice environ?

Any help would be most appreciated.

How about Bulgaria? I was looking at this place yesterday for a guy I work with. Kids club, beach location, all inc, and looks well, lovely!

    Thanks KB3.

I've never thought about Bulgaria. Have you been yourself and would recommend? It looks ok, it could be an option and it seems to have lots for kids.

Has anyone been to maybe Minorca or Portugal that they could recommend or Tenerife?

Have you thought of a cruise? There are deals a-plenty atm, lots for the kids to do and they wake up in a new country/city every day so wouldn't be bored. Someone like Island Crusies or Ocean Village would be spot on for you as they are aimed at families.

A cruise? I've never considered it. Do you not have to draw a pension to go on a cruise ?

I'll definitely have a look though, you never know. Thank Madge.

? at drawing a pension. We went on an Island Escape cruise for our honeymoon and it was fab. We chose it as we didn't want the formality that comes with some cruises (having to dress for dinner every night etc) and it couldn't have been better. There is a good kids club (Zoay will have more info as she took Linnhe on an Ocean Village cruise and she didn't want to leave!) and on our ship there were three restaurants; one completely informal and help yourself which is open 24 hours a day, one where you go within set time, are seated and buffet style with people serving meals and the other was a formal restaurant. I can't recommend cruising highly enough. We went to 10 different cities in Europe and only had to unpack once!

We could stretch to six hours as they're 3 and 8 but I guess I was trying to keep the search area down and thought I could find something to fit the bill near Spain et al unless there's a fabby place in Eygpt? Not sure she'd be up for Gambia.

Do you have a specific recommendation forTenerife? I had a girly holiday about 9 years ago but that was definitely not suitable for kids!

I'm starting to think the cruise could be the way to go, assuming the fact I get seasick in the bath won't matter ?

Well I have to say it does sound quite tempting. The only downside (apart from the sea sickness) is the ability to get away from them all. As much as I love my sister at least on dry land you can get in a car and drive away for a bit of 'me' time!

I'll have another look when I get home.

Thanks for replies, any other suggestions would be great.

About cruising - I am also a recent convert but there's no way I'd take young children on a cruise. Unless you keep them in a kids club or stay indoors all the time there's just too much potential for them to go over the side.

Ok, it doesn't happen, but the possibility would stop me from relaxing for a moment.

I completely disagree, we've been on 2 cruises, one when L was 11 months and the second when he was 2 and had a great time on both (and never once had a worry about him falling over the side). I would say that they would have been even better after the age of 3 as most kids clubs don't cater for younger than that. Both times we have gone for the informal dining and didn't attempt the organised tours when in dock.

I've been to Lanzarote and loved it we stayed in playa blanca

Tenerife we went to playa d'las americas didn't like it that much tbh but we were in a crap hotel

Gran Canaria was lovely we stayed in Porto Rico i think?

Portugal we stayed in Albufueira (sp) and it was lovely

Spain i've been to Salou and loved it

But my favourite place is Icmeler in turkey, although they don't have many AI type hotels so perhaps not really what you're after.
