Hotel rooms for guests

Sara, 12 April, 2022 at 16:56 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi all!

I'm asking you because my OH is winding me up Smiley xd

We have sourced a hotel near our venue and reserved 20 rooms for them to book. We've realised that with the people we know are coming, those rooms will be filled very quickly. My OH now wants us to go out and source another hotel (view the rooms and reserve them etc) as a back up, which feels long when we have enough things to do. Also, people can sort themselves out can't they? There isn't a shortage of hotels near our venue and they can use TripAdvisor like anyone else.

What do you think? Is this OTT? Did you do this?

Thanks x

PS - I just want you all to agree with me because this feels like a huge effort and all the people we are inviting are adults and know how to find hotels themselves!

I agree with you! Our venue includes rooms so we’ve allocated (and sold) these to family and guests who are travelling far/who we really want there but for everyone else, we’ve put some info about local accommodation (provided to us by the venue) on our wedding website and they can make their own arrangements. I think, unless the wedding is in a hotel/place with accommodation, it’s normal for guests to sort their own place to stay. Arranging a wedding is enough work without having to find all your guests a place to sleep! Hope your OH sees the light soon!

They can sort themselves out! We’ve got a room allocation of 20 rooms at a hotel near our venue and I’ve put all this information on the insert with the invites. I’ve also added some others hotels in same area as I know some guests won’t want to pay the same as the main hotel as it’s quite expensive. Grown adults can book their own accommodation!

Yep totally agree with you. If OH wants to go and look at hotels by himself let him, but I’m sure he won’t find that very appealing!!

Haha! So he can have a nice afternoon out enjoying viewing hotel rooms for guests and you can do something you’d prefer to do with your time. Everyone’s a winner!

Totally agree with you! If you want family/bridal party to stay in a specific place then of course it’s fine to arrange the accommodation for them, but all other guests can sort themselves out. Booking accommodation for other guests is not a stress you want on your plate, eg if people initially say they can come but then can’t, decide they would rather stay in an Airbnb, are late (or don’t) pay you if you’ve had to put down any money in advance…:far too many things that could add stress you just don’t need!

We have paid for the bridal party the night before as we specifically want them to stay with us, so as we have booked and paid. For the wedding night we had a discount code that we shared with our guests but we made sue we sent it to the poeple who we knew had to stay first so they could get a guarenteed room at the rate. id you have room limit i would send it to the people you think need to book first before sending to all so they can be sure to get a room. If the hotelk you have has other rooms I wouldnt send any other recommendations, simply say youihave rooms reserved and will be first come first served but there will be other rooms avaliable

Exactly! Hopefully I win this battle 🤣 he's being very kind but it isn't necessary when we have so many other things to do. Also, I kind of like that our guests make some kind of effort. When I went to a wedding last year I enjoyed shopping around for somewhere to stay 🤷‍♀️ it's part of being involved I think! X

I've never heard of anyone block booking rooms apart from the bridal party, unless it's for someone elderly or in poor health who needs a bit of extra support.

I've twice received a list of local 'recommended' accommodation from the couple, and while that has been very helpful, it was in no way expected.

Also, if you are reserving rooms for everyone who is attending that's likely to put pressure on people to choose the places you pick and they may prefer to go elsewhere.

We've just popped some options on our wedding website and a line that says if anyone's struggling they can reach out to us and we'll help them find somewhere Smiley smile

I think as long as you put a few options on your invites thats all that most people expect! I know that’s all I’ve ever experienced as a wedding guest and I certainly wouldn’t expect the bride and groom to have pre booked a room somewhere! It’s a nice thought but as you’ve said, you got enough on your plate already 😅 xx
