Hi guys,

I'm new to this so this is my first post...

Me and my partner of 6 years are recently engaged! I still can't stop smiling. He surprised me with the most beautiful ring! I've always wanted a Platinum wedding ring as I wanted to be that little bit different and its even more beautiful than I could have imagined! I would definitely recommend the platinum ring company, I can't stop showing it off!

Anyway, we are now getting down to planning our big day! Although we've been together a while now, its not something we've ever discussed. We're struggling to decide upon a hotel or a church ceremony. I know my parents will want me to get married in a church but neither me nor my partner are religious so i'm swaying more to the hotel option. What are people's opinions?

xx

Having never seen star wars, I don't really understand this but I'm guessing it's amusing! Ha. ?

Abrahamic religions accept one another as valid.

Hmmm, it could be said that you have 'faith' that it's amusing.

Your faith is well-placed. It is.

In a completely mutual manner? I can see how Christianity and Judaism might be down with that, but Islam? I can understand the shared text and respect for someone on a different path but I'm less sure that accepting another religion as 'valid' says anything about the 'truth' of any.

Well on the surface. When Muslims talk about the people that are "allowed" into Heaven, Christians are, I think, included. But I'm not entirely sure how this "exchange of ideas" works in practice.

Do what you and your partner wish to do. Not what your parents would like.

I'm sure they would like to see you happily married and that can be done at either a church or a hotel.

Give us a flash of any hotels you like the look of Smiley smile

Well I'm a Christian, practising CofE, and last time I was married in Church. This time, although I am divorced, our rector says he wodul marry us in church if we wanted as he knows the circumsatnaces of my divorce. We politely declined as a) he hadn't even asked about OH who has been divorced before also plus is a footstamping agnostic! I do like to see people getting married in Church though. I don't think it is more incongruous to swear on something nebulous than to swear on nothing at all; so saying 'I swear before God' (who I don't believe in) is no different to saying 'I swear' (on nothing in particular. Churches are special places even if one doesn't believe in the faith practised there, and should be shared.

As for the faith/religion thing. The Pastor at Uni in the late 80s used to espouse this view: religion was a faith with trappings and ceremonies, particular idiosyncracies. Christianity encompasses many religions so is, overall, a faith. I'm not sure I understood the distinction, not being a theologian, but it is just one view and not worth falling out over surely?

What other religions does Christianity cover?

I don't think non-religious ceremonies are asked to swear are they? I can't even remember.

I like Juliet's take on it personally:

    Do not swear at all;
Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
    And I'll believe thee.

Does the OP even care any more?
