How can I stop parcels being left with my neighbours?

Evil Yoda, 20 May, 2008 at 16:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

My neighbour has complained about parcels being left with them if we are not in. It doesn't happen often but she has complained all the same.

I contacted Royal Mail who have made a note not to leave anything with them but the problem I have is with companies who don't use RM. Is there anything I can do to stop them leaving things with our neighbour? A lot of online retailers don't have a 'special instructions' box, so short of not ordering something from a specific company or not ordering at all is there anything I can do?

Can you have them sent to work?

Put up a sign on your door/porch that states that you don't want parcels left with neighbours?

I hate it when companies do this; how do they know you'll ever get the package anyway?

Can your neighbour just say no when the people ask? I have done before when I know I am not going to be around to be able to give the parcel to my neighbour. Or are they getting annoyed with people knocking on the door too? Short of putting a sign on your door given the delivery people instructions I can't think what you could do.

I wish more companies would leave stuff with my neighbour, I seem to spend every weekend traveling to some random depo somewhere miles away to pick stuff up, or there is Next who just lob it over my fence ?

Well, this will sound pathetic but I don't want to put a sign up as my neighbours will probably see it and I don't want to offend any of them (I live in a block of 4 terraced houses).

I've no idea. From what she has said I suspect that she thinks we are taking her for granted. I live in a block of 4 houses but she's the only one who is in in the daytime so I suspect she probably gets deliveries for our other neighbours as well.

I think if it happens again I will just ask her to refuse to take the parcel in, although I'm not sure what she'll gain as someone will have still knocked on her door!

What a miserable cow she sounds. how much effort is it to walk 200 yards with someone's parcel?

i agree - but you dont know exactly how many parcels EY is getting. we have a neighbour who is never in during the day, and she gets on average, 3-4 deliveries a week. When we moved in, i was happy to take them if i was here, now i just cant be bothered. if it was one every few weeks, i would, but even when i was taking them, despite my leaving a note for her, it would take her days to come for it, and they were/are always big parcels. so, bollocks to that.

I would just tell her that if it's inconvenient for her to take them, she can refuse them. She doesn't have to answer the door either.

I'd just tell her to refuse them when they come to the door. We get the same 2 or 3 delivery men all the time so after a while they'd get the hint!

I know how annoying it is to be the one taking in the neighbours parcels all the time. I'm on maternity leave and have had delivery men try to leave parcels for houses 15 doors down. Once in a while is one thing but I was taking in parcels every other day so I started to refuse them and explained to the delivery man so he doesn't knock on my door anymore!

Not a lot of parcels = 1 every 3 months ish.

Yep - I think I'll just tell her to not take them in.

    Thanks

I would explain that you are happy for her to refuse the delivery and put a sign on your door saying not to disturb your neighbours.

Can't you put a sign on the door saying 'Don't bother trying to leave my parcels with Mrs Misery Bollocks at No. XX, she'll only moan.'

    ?

Maybe you could suggest to your neighbour for her to put a sign up on her door saying something along the lines of 'i am unable to take in parcels for the neighbours'. That way she shouldnt get disturbed by people knocking on her door.

Actually what Betty is saying makes sense. If she put a sign up, she wouldn't get bothered!

well yes, but who wants a sign on their door which effectively says "i m a grumpy ***"? delivery people will always try neighbours, and w hy not? it saves them time. she can just say no, she doesnt have to accept it. plus, 1 every three months? sheesh ?

That does make sense! Next time she mentions that we should get a doorbell I shall suggest it. My H did point out to her that us getting a doorbell wouldn't make the slightest difference as we still won't be in ?

Some friends of mine got a lot of parcels. They invested in some kind of box that sits outside their front door, bolted down/secured in some way and the postie pops the parcel in it, and closes the lid. Then its unopenable until they open it with a key.

    Worked out well for them.
