I think the biggest thing is to start with what you can comfortably afford rather than deciding on the wedding first and trying to find the money afterwards.

We’ve found it helps to separate the wedding costs from normal household expenses and work out a realistic amount that can be saved each month. If parents or family members want to contribute, it’s also worth being clear about what they’re comfortable paying for rather than relying on an uncertain amount.

I’d also prioritise the things that actually matter to the couple and cut back on the extras that can quickly add up. There’s nothing wrong with having a smaller wedding if it means you’re not starting married life with unnecessary debt.

For families with children or other regular commitments, I’d definitely keep those costs protected first and treat the wedding budget as what’s left after essential expenses and savings are covered. A simple budget spreadsheet can make this much easier to see.
