How do I know if a cheque has bounced?

26 November, 2008 at 06:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I was paid on Friday using a cheque but even though the bank said it would, it hasn't cleared this morning as it should have done. It's still saying on my bank:

Account balance £xxx.xx Available balance £0.00

What does it mean? Will it go through?

Thanks

Jo

For my bank it would normally be the other way round if a cheque was waiting to clear - the available balance would show as higher than the account balance. The other way around would be if something was waiting to go out.

I think it depends on exactly how your bank does things, though. I would call them and ask.

It might just not be there yet because its not 'office hours' yet IYSWIM. Im sure they will be able to tell you if you do call though. Frustrating!

I'm with HBOS and quite often cleared cheques don't show as available until 9am. It also shows the balance in the same way as yours. Once a chq on my account did bounce and Balance and available balance both showed no chq.

    Hope it clears ok!
