How do you pronounce reportage?

Ohwhatatuesday, 24 September, 2013 at 21:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

As in reportage photographer? I always thought it was repor-taaarj but I overheard someone in the hairdressers to day saying report-ige. Have I been pronouncing it wrongly? it wouldn't surprise me as I often get this kind of thing wrong (pronounced vehemently ve-hem (hard h)ently for years). I wanted to check it before I ever said it out loud again!

I say report-idge but it could be an accent thing I suppose. I've never heard it said the way you pronounce it though.

Footlong - I think I say it the same - I definitely split the re and por as in re-por-taaarj just struggled to write it down right. Good! as long as there's a few of us in the taaarj/taaaj club, I worried for a minute it was another one I'd got totally wrong but if I'm not the only one I feel much better whatever the right way is!

Of course, you were perfectly correct, given that you were discussing the plane/train company, yes? Smiley winking

Those saying repor-tidge? Would it feel pretentiously faux-French to say it as repor-taaaaj?

How do you say dressage? Pate? Fiancé/e? All anglicised? 30% of English words are of French origin.

But one that gets me is clem-ay-tis. I say clem-uh-tis.

And it is indeed a word I use quite often as I grow a fair few of them!

I'd say all of these the same except garage which is definitely garidge for me - I think its because I grew up liking garage music and I would have been laughed at for saying garaaj music!

Yep, all those others I say 'correctly'; Noo-gaah, Dressarj, Patay, Fee-an-cay etc.

Garage is gar-idge but I'm nothern. I used to say grarrs and glarss when I was a southener but quickly got out of that habit when I moved to the North East!

I can't put my finger on it but rep-ort-aarj just sounds wanky.
