How do you pronounce these words?

fiorelli, 19 May, 2008 at 22:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

In my son's school reading book, he has some dinosaur names (He is reading the Rigby Rocket series of books, 'What Damian Didn't know About Dinosaurs' is the one he brought home today). There are the usual pterodactyl, Diplodocus, Tyrannosaurus rex, and then there is Seismosaurus, Compsognathus, Pelecanimimus, Therisinosaurus cheloniformis, breviparopus, all of which (except the usual ones), I can only guess at how they are meant to be pronounced, Can anyone shed any light, as at the moment I am sounding rather thick to my 7 year old!

Thanks.

Two bottles of wine usually helps with the pronunciations of these creatures.....

Did they change Diplodocus Gingey? What was it before?

Peter, you're probably right about the wine, but that doesn't help me in looking good to helping my son now does it??

I think it went from dip-low-doe-cus to di-plod-ocus (I probably got my phonetics wrong though)

I still call it a dip -low-doe-cus. Is the other way american? Not sure when/why it changed.

    Re the others, I'd say:

    Seismosaurus - size-mo-saurus

Thereisinosaurus cheloniformis - thu -ri - seen-osaurus not sure about the second word - kel-on-i-formis maybe?

Compsognathus - comps -og - nathus

    Pelecanimimus - Pelecan -imim -us

    Breviparopus - Brev - y - para -pus

That doesn't necessarily make it right though! Maybe see if there is anything on the Natural History museum website or similar?

    Thanks for replying all.

I still say Dip-low-doe-cus - hadn't realised there was a different way! This is also the way I told my son to say it.

We read through the book again this morning and I decided that as long as he gave it a good stab at working out what the word said, I was happy with that. He actually remembered a couple from reading it yesterday and gave a good stab at reading the others (and I gave a good stab at telling him what I thought they said, and we both had a laugh at it!), but as he read the rest of the book fine with no problems, and could answer questions on it, I have decided that he's done enough to be able to say to his teacher that he has read it.
