How Important is Time of Day for Photos?

detra, 8 January, 2014 at 16:35 Posted on Planning 0 6

My very small wedding (n=20) is at 12:00 noon. I have heard that the best time for pictures is close to sunset, which is 8:30pm in May. I was thinking about doing a small get together at my house after the wedding for a few hours, then pictures 4:00-6:00pm (we only have the photographer for 2 hours), then going out for dinner after. There isn’t anything planned after the dinner. My parents says it is silly to base the day around pictures, and that I should do them right after the ceremony (1-3pm). I have heard that is the worst time of day to get them done. Does anyone have any suggestions around this? I wanted a later wedding time but it was booked.

Thanks for any advice!

Your parents are right. And there is nothing wrong in having photos at 1pm or mid day. If the ceremony venue is nice then straight after is perfect. If you prefer back at home then that just fine too. Forget any cleaver clog's you have read about the light being the best in the evening if its cloudy then it makes no difference and most good photographers will of mastered any kind of extra flash needed to make any time of day a beautful light.
And if you go for it straight after the wedding your 2 hours photography may just be able to slip in some shots of the ceremony too.

I should add, photography location will be near my house, which is not near ceremony. We aren't too interested in professional shots within the church so will just have a few family members snap these.

It sounds like you don't think it would effect pictures if we did it 1-3? I think this would be good... I just find pictures really important and want them to be the best possible.

Wow, if like me you were getting married on or around mid summers day, you would never get any shots close to sunset! It was still light at my wedding by nearly 10pm. I agree that any time of day is good.

In an ideal world there is a time of day for having photographs done....but we live in England and that beautiful pre sunset may not happen any way! Which is why your photographer, who know light should be able to rustle up a good photo location whatever time of day. Generally speaking the unflattering light is around 1pm, but if you side shuffle into a spot of shade.,,,,voila, gorgeous photos! So in hindsight I would fit it into when you would like them done Smiley winking

    This...^^^^^^^^^^^^

Later in the day photography often offers more luxurious colouring in the lighting although as photographers we know how to deal with all that comes our way....sun, hail, rain, thunderstorms....you know, a typical British summer!!!!

Having said that, sunsets can give some great opportunities.....

This shouldn't be something you need to worry about. Speak to your photographer and they should be able to take care of this for you if they know what they're doing. Come-up with a time that suits you, rather than planning around your photography times. You're paying them for their professional know-how. You wouldn't ask a forum what spanner your plumber should use right? Smiley smile

I always meet with my couples two months prior to the wedding to talk about their day and work out when is best for their photography based around their wedding day schedule, and I work around this and find the best possible light and location for them. As I said, you shouldn't need to worry about this.
