One thing people always seem to forget is how far your photographer may be travelling. I only photograph weddings local to Leicestershire so I have a low carbon foot print in that regard.

When you search in directories like the one in here you search for - in your case Sussex photographers but the ones that come up first will be the ones who have paid the most to be there and they may not be from your area but instead are willing to travel, some I have seen up to 2.5 hours, and this is on a motorway with the risk of getting stuck.

So if you want a carbon neutral wedding a good start would be local suppliers.

Thanks a lot for this idea! I hadn’t thought about how far photographers travel and the impact that has. Using local suppliers makes a lot of sense to keep things more eco-friendly and support people nearby. I’ll remember this when looking for wedding services!

Skip non-essential stuff or DIY decor/signs etc using vintage/repurposed materials. When buying anything for the wedding, think about it's long-term future - what are you going to do with it after the wedding day? Can it have a future use or are you just going to have to throw it out?

For flowers, see if you can find a local florist who uses local, seasonal flowers - and make sure any table decoration flowers are given away afterwards so people can enjoy them for as long as they last.

Don't buy single-use items. For clothing, consider letting the wedding party chose outfits they will wear again. Consider buying a second-hand wedding dress or getting something in natural fabrics than can be dyed and reworn at a later date.

Look for caterers who specialise in local, seasonal produce.

See if there are any venues in your area that have made a special effort towards being carbon neutral.
