How long does a civil ceremony last?

Theodora, 26 May, 2025 at 10:24 Posted on Planning 1 2

Hello,

I'm having a really hard time with creating the timeline for the wedding day. I'm not British and have never attended a wedding in this country, so I have no clue how long things take and how the whole day is generally meant to go. Our registrar hasn't contacted us yet, so I don't even have a guide from her as to the timings, which makes it even harder when I have to decide times to have printed on the invitations and to give to the venue.

Our ceremony is booked for 3pm and our BBQ will start at 5pm, is it safe to say that cocktail hour will start at 4pm? We are going to be doing readings and I also have something planned as a surprise for FH when I'm doing my entrance, but I really am not sure how much time to allocate.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

By 3.30 you will be out having confetti thrown at you even with readings. So you can start your drinks then, at the same time photos will be done usually 1.5 hours - 5pm BBQ

The registrar may also put restrictions on how many reading you can do, due to time allocated to your ceremony.
