How long would you expect an engagement ring to ..

incognito, 10 April, 2008 at 18:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 68

...last? Would you expect it to see the end of your life? And do you wear yours every day?!

Random question, but hey! Mine has broken (and having had it sent away to be fixed, they have discovered a second hairline crack!!) and I'm gutted. It wasn't massively expensive, but was from a well known high street jeweller (I appreciate this may be the problem!!) and they told me 'Well, they aren't made to last'!!!

Also, anyone know anywhere independent in Lancashire/Manchester that would repair it?? (Just not convinced by the repair offered by siad high-street store).

UPDATE
Well, I had a phone call today to say that to replace the shank (and needs to be whole shank) it will cost £224 - which is £25 more than it cost in the first place!!! Thus saying rhe diamond is worthless, and I can't work out why they can't melt down my gold and use that!!

Or I can just have the breaks soldered but that won't be as strong (and oh, it was sooo strong in the first place![V]). Her other suggestions were to just buy a new ring (if only I had that kind of money just floating around and obviously there's no sentimental value in an engagement ring!!!!), or I could use their Design Day service, and go in store and commission a new ring the same as my old one and then they'd use the same diamond. I dread to think how much that costs!!

I am going to go collect the ring and take it to an independent jeweller to see what they say. I shall NOT be having anything more to do with H Samuel. Avoid them at all costs!!!

I'd like to think life. However H bought me a ring years ago from a jeweller's which I imagine some people may have had as an engagement ring and it broke within about a year and could be fixed/replaced as they didn't make it anymore ☹️

I would like to think they have the potential to last forever (if not lost or whatever).

I would also like to think any problems like stones coming loose and things could be fixed.

I do know of a good independent jeweller in Rochdale - Butterworths, they are not cheap but then you get what you pay for. I've found their service to be good and very efficient, several of my family use them too and have always been pleased with outcome. I don't think we've had anything repaired but have had jewellery polished / resized etc.

I wear both rings everyday-I sleep with them on too!

Only time I remove them is to apply body lotion or fake tan.

I would expect them to last 'til I croack it.

I'd expect it to last a lifetime, or near as dammit.

I have my grandmother's engagement ring, it dates back to the 1930s and is still fine. I also inherited my mum's ring when she died; it needed re-setting due to a few wobbly diamonds, but it was quite and elaborate design, thus had more scope for things to go wrong. She'd been wearing it for over 30 years.

I would hope that my engagement ring would last a good 40-50 years! As long as our marriage really!! I don't wear mine everyday though (not allowed to at work).

We used this guy https://www.david-moss.co.uk/ in Ormskirk to do both my engagement ring & our wedding rings - and he was fabulous. He may be able to do something with your ring?

Thanks all. Good to know I'm not mad expecting it to last forever.

Thanks for the jeweller recommendations too - I might contact some of them and see if they could fix it. Just not sure I trust the HS store to do it now!

I've just lost a stone in mine and I've had it about 5 1/2 years and am not happy. I would expect it to last longer than that tbh even if not necessarily for life.

I would expect it to last a lifetime yes but seeing as I don't wear mine anymore, it's not really an issue. ?

I would be mightily peed off if it ever had to be repaired. It did not originate from a high street jeweler and at the price it cost it had better last ?

I'd want to kill someone if it's didn't last - H would be distraught. It's why he went to a very expensive jeweller to get it. Wedding ring from the same place.

So what is the cut off point, price wise, for an engagement ring that should last, and one that shouldn't?

    I ask purely for information.
    id="quote">

Haven't got a clue. I would imagine its a personal cut off point for everyone. Some people will gamble away £100K and not skip a heart beat, I would have a heart attack in comparison. I can only tell you I would not be happy if mine broke.

My ring was my grandmothers it did her lifetime and I hope it does mine as well. I would be very miffed though especially being told they aren't meant to last.

I would have though a lifetime until a few months ago. I also got mine from a very well known high street jeweller and lost the stone from it when I was at work. I had worn it every day for 7.5yrs. In some miracle my manager found the stone 6 hours after I lost it!

I've had my engagement ring 6 & half years and about 6 months ago I noticed the diamond moving around, took it to get fix, they didn't do a very good job because I noticed about 2 weeks ago that the diamond was lose again. I took it to a different jewellers and its been mended properly and actually looks like new now. However it has cost me £55 to get it right.

I've had my engagement ring for just under five years and I noticed about six months ago that two of the four solder joints on the stone setting have failed as has the resizing join. We bought it from a local high street jeweller (a small chain in the south west I think) and it wasn't a cheap ring. Like you, I'm very disappointed. I must do something about it.

I've barely taken mine off in 8+ years.

its not expensive but it is priceless and i do expect it to last forever, however as i am not in the slightest bit careful with it i do expect it to need repair at some point. i got channel set as i doubt i could be trusted with a claw setting.

I don't really think the retailer makes any difference - a ring should be expected to have a pretty long life expectancy. It's ridiculous for anyone to suggest otherwise, even Elizabeth Duke.

I would - I used a national chain to buy mine from. I wish now that I'd discovered the jewellers that I've used since!

Regardless of cost it should last pretty well. I have a gold and onynx ring I got for my 10th birthday. (so you can see how expensive it wasn't!) I wear it every day and have done for years it's fine.

The only thing I'd say with e-rings is that they tend towards claw set solitaires which are more easiliy damaged than other settings, even so they aren't soemthing that should be expected not to last.

My engagement ring is from 1920s and I also wear my grandmothers from 1950s and they seem to be doing well.

Just a thought but does that mean 'eternity' rings aren't made to last either?

No problem but at no stage did I say how much it cost.

Ah ok. It's just the way you mentioned how much yours had cost made it sound as if the amount of money was particularly relevant ? I'm sure no one would be happy if theirs broke ?

I'll admit to getting my e-ring from H Samuels, it's a kanchan sapphire claw set with 12 teeny tiny diamonds. I've worn it day and night for 11 years (mainly because my finger is now fatter and I can't get it off[:I]?). I'd expect it to last for a good long while, though like Legless, I don;t take care of it so could well have to have it fixed at some stage. I have noticed that the band is thinner now than my w-ring band by a couple of mms. They're both 9 carat gold, but my mum made the w-ring out of a piece of gold, and a lovely job she did too, and it seems to be standing the test of time better than the high street e-ring. It's the stones I'm sentimental about (I chose sapphire for a particular reason) so if the band wears out, I'd try to get the stones reset into a new ring and consider that I still had the important part of the ring. If the sapphire fell out or broke, I;d be much more gutted.

Our jeweller said that you're meant to get your jewellery cleaned and 'serviced' regularly, and there's some clause on our insurance that says I have to get the setting checked every so often to make sure it's alright. I've had mine for 3 years and have had the setting tightened once so far.
