How many courses in your reception meal?

ShaynaV, 15 May, 2013 at 21:59 Posted on Planning 0 36

Hey gals!

I've been hearing different things from different caterers about what's a typical number for courses at the reception....I've heard things between 3-6. How are you guys planning your dinners/how many courses are you offerening the guests? We're having about 200 guests, if that changes anything. ?

thanks for the advice! X

    1-Amuse Bouche

    2-Appetizers

    3-Main Course

    4- Pre dessert

    5- Dessert

6- Sweetmeats followed by tea and coffee

(we were going to have an intermediate course between appetizers and mains but decided it would be too much food)

3 courses for us, followed by coffee. But I LOVE the idea of pre-desserts, followed by more desserts funky!

I personally think 3 courses max! you dont want everyone so full they carnt move/drink/dance and just want a nap. Plus i imagine there will be loads of waste. Have you ever eaten more than 3 courses yourself? i struggle to eat a main if i have a starter so not sure how id manage 6 plates of food. And can i just ask.....what the frick is pre dessert? lol

We're having four courses: starter, soup, main and dessert, then teas and coffee etc. We're doing canapes earlier and a buffet in the evening. The last two weddings I went to were four courses as well, but I wouldn't be bothered going somewhere with less.

What is the pre-dessert? I'm very intrigued.

We are just having two courses. BBQ and dessert, the barbecue will be so filling I don't think we need anymore. Also having hot and cold buffet in the evening and of course the cake! Also hoping to have Creme eggs and caramel eggs as the canapés.

Canapés, main dish & dessert for us. Plus evening food.

Our caterers are providing between 8-10 canapés per person so quite a substantial amount I think, hence no need for a starter.

She means it isn't expected/important if she goes to a wedding serving fewer courses, not that it's not worth the effort! Smiley smile

We have not chosen our menu yet.

it will basically be a mini dessert to eat while the proper desserts are being made/cooked.

    4 coffee/tea and chocolates

Then having evening buffet of poutine and our cake table as well. Plenty of food, I'd say!

We are having starters passed around canape style, followed by a sit down main course (roast chicken) and pudding (pavolva), both served on the table for people to help themselves, rather than plated up. Then cheese and cake later in the evening. Ours is very informal though, I can see how lots of courses might be fun for a posh do!

We're having afternoon tea but the caterers are serving that to the table in 2 courses, with savoury items first served with the wine and then the scones and cakes with tea and coffee. We also have lots of other nibbly opportunities - we're having retro bar snacks with the welcome drinks, there will be cake pops and cupcake cases filled with sweets on the centrepieces for them to pick at and the favours are sweet too. Then in the evening we're having a Fish & Chip buffet followed by the wedding cakes.

    Canapes after ceremony

aussie bbq (steaks, sausages, minted lamb kebabs, 5ft pealla dish with chorizo, barramundi, mussels, calamari, chicken mmmm getting hungry just writing this! with french bread, sauces, potato salad, coleslaw, salad) option for seconds

    dessert (cheesecake or choc mousse)

    tea / coffee

in evening serving cake on the bar and hog roast baps.

I really hope this is enough!

Totally agree with a less vs more approach as peeps often don't even remember the food sometimes...or even appreciate the cake if they've eaten too much! and its all about the cake Smiley winking

I reckon a less is more approach is best as it gives your guests the opportunity to enjoy the cake!!
